Severe obesity, a susceptibility factor for developing inflammatory bowel disease. Results of a population-based study.

Background And Aims: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) develops in genetically susceptible individuals exposed to certain environmental factors, of which only a few have been established. We aimed to assess whether bariatric surgery (BS) and severe obesity are associated with an increased risk of developing IBD.

Methods: Adults diagnosed with obesity or severe obesity between 2005 and 2020 were identified from the Catalan Health Surveillance System; those diagnosed with IBD prior to the diagnosis of obesity or severe obesity were excluded.

Comprehensive air quality assessment including non-targeted approaches in primary schools from Spain.

This work aims to establish a strategy to comprehensively assess the indoor air quality in schools including the analysis of chemical pollutants, bio-aerosols like fungi, bacteria and respiratory viruses and the identification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds applying non-targeted approaches. For this, a pilot study was performed in four primary schools from Spain, located in different urban and rural areas during different seasons. Common indoor pollutants, like CO NO, O, CO, particulate matter (PM, PM), ultrafine particles (UFP), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and formaldehyde (HCHO), were assessed in terms of maximum recommended levels, daily variations, seasonality, and school location.

Revealing biases in insect observations: A comparative analysis between academic and citizen science data.

Citizen Science is a powerful tool for biodiversity research, as it facilitates data recording at large scales that would otherwise be impossible to cover by standard academic research. Despite its benefits, the accuracy of citizen science data remains a subject of concern among scientists, with varying results reported so far. Neither citizen science data nor academic records are immune to biases, which can significantly impact the quality and reliability of observations.

Ice phenology interactions with water and air temperatures in high mountain lakes.

Ice phenology is of great importance for the thermal structure of lakes and ponds and the biology of lake species. Under the current climate change conditions, ice-cover duration has been reduced by an advance in ice-off, and a delay in ice-on, and future projections foresee this trend as continuing. Here, we describe the current ice phenology of Pyrenean high mountain lakes and ponds, including ice-cover duration and ice-on and ice-off dates.

Indoor Air Quality and Bioaerosols in Spanish University Classrooms.

A comprehensive study assessed indoor air quality parameters, focusing on relevant air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM and PM), gaseous compounds (CO, CO, formaldehyde, NO) and volatile/semi-volatile organic chemicals, as well as respiratory viruses (including SARS-CoV-2), fungi and bacteria in Spanish university classrooms. Non-target screening strategies evaluated the presence of organic pollutants inside and outside the classrooms. Saliva samples from teachers and students were collected to explore correlations between respiratory viruses in the air and biological samples.
