Heat loss across the beak is an important thermoregulatory mechanism among birds, particularly in large-beaked taxa such as toucans (Ramphastidae) and hornbills (Bucerotidae). The number of species investigated remains limited, as does our understanding of how the functional significance of this pathway varies with environmental variables such as humidity, with little previous research on species inhabiting humid environments. We used infrared thermography to test the hypothesis that large (600-1300 g) Afrotropical forest hornbills use their beaks and casques as thermal radiators.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of an interleukin-1 (IL-1) antagonist anakinra (Kineret) on endometriosis-related quality of life (QoL), pain, and inflammatory biomarkers.

Methods: This was a single-site, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, cross-over pilot clinical study of patients recruited at an academic specialty clinic. Eligible participants were females aged 18-45 years with menstrual cycles every 24-32 days.

Article Synopsis
  • The Letter reports the most accurate measurement so far of the matter-antimatter imbalance during Pb-Pb collisions at a high energy level of 5.02 TeV.
  • It utilizes the Statistical Hadronization framework to determine precise values for the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μ_{Q} and μ_{B}.
  • The analysis of antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios shows that the collisions create a system that is generally baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity.

The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p_{T}) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions.
