Article Synopsis
  • The ESSR updated its 2015 consensus on soft tissue tumor imaging due to advancements in technology and updated classifications.
  • A panel of 46 radiologists from 12 European countries used a validated Delphi method to reach consensus on imaging strategies, resulting in high agreement on 47 statements.
  • Key findings highlight that MRI is preferred for monitoring soft tissue sarcomas, with chest CT recommended for assessing metastasis and interventional radiology playing a role in treating specific cases.

Bone marrow is a dynamic organ with variable composition in relation to age or pathophysiological changes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the technique of choice to assess the different components of the bone marrow based on the different information provided by the different characteristics of the MRI sequences. This article provides an overview of the MRI appearances of normal and abnormal bone marrow.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of an intradiscal injection of allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) to a sham placebo in chronic low back pain patients.
  • 114 participants were randomly assigned to receive either the BM-MSC injection or a placebo, and outcomes were measured over 12 months using pain and disability scales, along with MRI assessments.
  • The results showed no significant difference in effectiveness between the BM-MSC and placebo groups after 12 months, although the procedure was deemed safe with no serious adverse events reported.

Nowadays, the use of advanced MRI sequences such as diffusion-weighted imaging or perfusion-weighted imaging in the field of musculoskeletal radiology remains limited compared to other anatomical regions and subspecialties. Several reasons underpin this, primarily technical challenges, and a longstanding reliance on conventional and morphological evaluations of soft tissue and bone lesions. Experienced radiologists often assert that these advanced sequences do not offer added diagnostic value, claiming that a morphological approach suffices.
