Background: Lung ultrasound (LUS) in an emerging technique used in the intensive care unit (ICU). The derivative LUS aeration score has been shown to have associations with mortality in invasively ventilated patients. This study assessed the predictive value of baseline and early changes in LUS aeration scores in critically ill invasively ventilated patients with and without ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) on 30- and 90-day mortality.

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a frequent cause of hypoxemic respiratory failure with a mortality rate of approximately 30%. Identifying ARDS subphenotypes based on "focal" or "non-focal" lung morphology has the potential to better target mechanical ventilation strategies of individual patients. However, classifying morphology through chest radiography or computed tomography is either inaccurate or impractical.

Background: Endotracheal suctioning causes discomfort, is associated with adverse effects, and is resource-demanding. An artificial secretion removal method, known as an automated cough, has been developed, which applies rapid, automated deflation, and inflation of the endotracheal tube cuff during the inspiratory phase of mechanical ventilation. This method has been evaluated in the hands of researchers but not when used by attending nurses.

The purpose of this study was to develop a laboratory developed test (LDT) for HSV1/2 and VZV to run on fully automated Hologic Panther Fusion® System. The Panther Fusion System is a fully automated walkaway system, providing end-to-end workflow from sample input to DNA/RNA extraction, amplification, automated analysis, and reporting to a laboratory information system (LIS). The LDT was developed and validated on 230 clinical and 20 reference samples (n = 250) and compared to a commercially available kit.
