Background: The Conformal Left Atrial Appendage System (CLAAS) is a transcatheter implant designed to occlude the left atrial appendage to prevent stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The implant incorporates a novel polyurethane polycarbonate-urea foam matrix to enhance device performance. The objective of this study was to characterize the thrombogenicity, sealing, implant integrity, local tissue response, and systemic toxicity of the implant in a healthy canine model.

The previous 2009 vancomycin consensus guidelines recommend trough monitoring as a surrogate marker for the target area under the curve over 24 hours to minimum inhibitory concentration (AUC/MIC). However, recent data suggest that trough monitoring is associated with higher nephrotoxicity.

The area-under-the-curve to minimum inhibitory concentration (AUC/MIC) has been identified as the most appropriate pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) target for vancomycin. The 2009 vancomycin consenus guidelines recommended specific trough concentrations as a surrogate marker for AUC/MIC.
