A three-step synthetic route giving access to nonsymmetrical bisazolyl 2,4,6-trisubstituted pyridines with different substituents on the pyrazole, indazole, and pyridine heterocycles is described. From the readily available 4-bromo-2,6-difluoropyridine, both fluorine atoms allow for easy selective stepwise substitution, and the bromine atom provides easy access to additional functionalities through both Suzuki and Sonogashira Pd(0) cross-coupling reactions. These synthons represent optimal structures as building blocks in complexation and metalloorganic structures for the tuning of their chelating and photophysical properties.

By combining the structural features of dihydropyrimidinone and 1,2,3-triazole heterocycles, novel hybrid compounds were synthesized using a simple and convenient method. A series of novel mono and bis 1,2,3-triazole was synthesized via copper-catalyzed Huisgen azide-alkyne cycloadditions (CuAAC) under microwave irradiation. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antiviral activity against varicella-zoster virus (VZV).

Solid-state CPL measurements were performed for the first time on hybrid, laminar materials based on γ-ZrP pillared with organic diphosphonates. Ad hoc optically pure diphosphonates were synthesized and the luminescence properties of their complexation with Tb(III) were verified in solution. CD and CPL measurements showed that the bistriazolylpyridine chromophores bonded to the metal provided an effective chiral environment that produced significant signals.

Two layered zirconium phosphates containing Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) mono- or diphosphonates and diquat, {Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)[]/ZrP/DQ(++)} and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)[]/ZrP/DQ(++), covalently attached to the phosphate layers exhibit notable photovoltaic response (the maximum V(OC), J(SC), and FF were 0.093 V, 16.8 microA cm(-2) and 0.

The characterization of a new irreversible optical absorption-based one-shot sensor for magnesium is described. The magnesium photoactive probe is 7-diethylamino-3-(3,4-ethylendioxybenzoyl)coumarin immobilized in a plasticized polymeric membrane. The magnesium selectivity can be explained in terms of size and charge density of magnesium and charge-separated resonance forms contribution in the excited state of coumarin.
