Coronal plane computed tomography (CT) was performed in 26 consecutive patients with clinical suspicion of tarsal coalition. Twenty patients had plain CT and 6 had CT talocalcaneonavicular arthrography. Fifteen patients were found to have coalition.

We reviewed 15 children with transient synovitis of the hip who had aspiration of an effusion under local anaesthesia with ultrasound guidance. There were no significant complications; aspiration was useful for diagnosis and gave considerable symptomatic relief. We discuss the role of ultrasound in diagnosis and treatment.

Ultrasound examination has been recommended for the evaluation of acute haemorrhages into soft tissues or joints in haemophilic patients. We have reviewed the notes of all such patients admitted during one calendar year and find that in 47 separate admissions the ultrasound examination assisted management decisions on 27 occasions. The technique is described with an analysis of the ways in which ultrasound observations may influence the clinician.
