Lipid imaging mass spectrometry (LIMS) allows for establishing the bidimensional distribution of lipid species within a tissue section. One of the main advantages is the generation of spatial information on lipid species distribution at a spatial (lateral) resolution bordering on single-cell resolution with no need to isolate cells. Thus, LIMS images demonstrate, with a level of detail never described before, that lipid profiles are highly sensitive to cell type and pathophysiological state.

Article Synopsis
  • Mumps is primarily a childhood infection characterized by swollen parotid glands, but a recent outbreak in Chile affected adults aged 20-35 despite the earlier success of the triple virus vaccine.
  • During 2018-2019, researchers analyzed 592 suspected mumps cases, finding a significant percentage positive for mumps antibodies (19.8% IgM and 95.9% IgG), with a notable male majority among positive IgM cases.
  • Genetic analysis revealed G and N genotypes in some cases, highlighting the importance of laboratory findings in diagnosing mumps and understanding the outbreak through an epidemiological surveillance program.

Background And Objective: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to self-reported difficulties in concentration, memory, and decision-making. Since SCD is based on subjective experiences, no specific medical test can definitively confirm its presence, making early detection challenging. Thus, it is advantageous to develop an AI model to capitalize on self-reported health complications, personality traits, and sociodemographic factors for early detection of SCD.

Detecting shielded special nuclear material, such as nuclear explosives, is a difficult challenge pursued by non-proliferation, anti-terrorism, and nuclear security programs worldwide. Interrogation with intense fast-neutron pulses is a promising method to characterize concealed nuclear material rapidly but is limited by suitable source availability and proven instrumentation. In this study we have pioneered a demonstration of such an interrogation method using a high-intensity, short-pulse, laser-driven neutron source that offers potential benefits compared to conventional neutron sources.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis relies on the presence of extracellular β-amyloid (Aβ) and intracellular hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau). Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between AD pathologies and infectious agents, with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) being a leading candidate. Our investigation, using metagenomics, mass spectrometry, western blotting, and decrowding expansion pathology, detects HSV-1-associated proteins in human brain samples.
