The descent is a critical part of a dive, both physically and mentally. Pulmonary ventilation, expressed as respiratory minute volume (RMV) and heart rate (HR) were recorded during fast and slow descents to 35 meters (m) in open water while breathing compressed air, and during swimming horizontally at moderate velocity at an 11-m depth. Values of both types of descents were compared with reference values recorded at 11 m, the "plateau" phase, halfway through the 35-m dives.

Introduction: In scuba-diving practice, instantaneous gas consumption is generally calculated from the fall in cylinder pressure without considering the effects of water temperature (heat transfer) and adiabatic processes. We aimed to develop a simple but precise method for calculating the instantaneous gas consumption during a dive.

Methods: With gas thermodynamics and water/gas heat transfer, the instantaneous released gas mass was modelled.

Since 1850, compressed-air work has been used to prevent shafts or tunnels under construction from flooding. Until the 1980s, workers were digging in compressed-air environments. Since the introduction of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), very little digging under pressure is needed.
