Creation and Implementation of a Blood Smear Simulation Model.

Being able to prepare a diagnostic blood smear for evaluation is an essential skill for veterinary practitioners. While this basic technique can be demonstrated via videos or illustrations, it can only be learned through practice and with feedback. With the necessity for virtual learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, a model was developed and paired with an online module to facilitate at home instruction and practice of blood smear preparation.

Transcervical Vertebral Artery Origin Endarterectomy for Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency.

Vertebral artery (VA) stenosis is a cause of vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) and disabling posterior circulation stroke, accounting for up to 30% of all strokes. Although the natural history of VBI is not as well delineated as that of carotid stenosis, strokes in the basilar circulation can be more disabling than their anterior circulation counterparts. Stenosis exceeding 30% at the origin of the vertebral artery is associated with increased risk of stroke.

Correlation of cytology to histology in a case of canine granulomatous colitis in a Boxer dog.

A 2-year-old castrated male mixed breed dog presented to the North Carolina State Veterinary Teaching Hospital for chronic diarrhea with hematochezia and weight loss. Cytology performed on a rectal scraping revealed macrophages containing magenta, light pink, and variably blue granular inclusions, and phagocytosed material concerning for infectious organisms. Histopathology was consistent with granulomatous colitis and identified intra-histiocytic bacterial organisms, confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)-tissue culture-confirmed Escherichia coli.

Evaluation of Retention of Veterinary Clinical Pathology Knowledge between Second-Year and Fourth-Year Clinical Pathology Courses.

There is a concern over long-term retention of knowledge in professional programs. The goal of this study was to evaluate the retention of veterinary clinical pathology knowledge between the fourth-semester and fourth-year clinical pathology courses. We hypothesize that students will forget a significant amount of content area knowledge between the fourth semester and fourth year in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.
