Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of concurrent optical and magnetic stimulation (COMS) on hard-to-heal wounds in real-world settings, applied 1-3 times a week for up to 12 weeks alongside standard care.
  • A total of 27 patients (average age 72) with unresponsive wounds, such as venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers, showed a 69% average reduction in wound area, with 50% achieving complete closure by the end of the study.
  • The findings suggest COMS is effective in treating tough wounds, particularly pressure and venous leg ulcers, and it may be useful for debridement and preparing wounds for further treatments like skin grafts.

Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the evidence on the efficacy of high-calorie, high-protein nutritional formula enriched with arginine, zinc, and antioxidants (disease-specific support) in patients with pressure ulcers (PUs).

Methods: Randomized controlled trials in English published from January 1997 until October 2015 were searched for in electronic databases (EMBASE, Medline, PubMed, and CINAHL). Studies comparing a disease-specific nutritional support (oral supplements or tube feeding) to a control nutritional intervention enabling the satisfaction of energy requirements regardless of the use of high-calorie formula or placebo or no support for at least 4 weeks were considered eligible.

Background: There are indications that older adults who suffer from poor balance have an increased risk for adverse health outcomes, such as falls and disability. Monitoring the development of balance over time enables early detection of balance decline, which can identify older adults who could benefit from interventions aimed at prevention of these adverse outcomes. An innovative and easy-to-use device that can be used by older adults for home-based monitoring of balance is a modified bathroom scale.

Background And Purpose: Decreased grip strength is a predictor of adverse outcomes in older adults. A Grip-ball was developed that can be used for home-based self-monitoring of grip strength to detect decline at an early stage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of measurements obtained with the Grip-ball in older adults.

Objective: To record and assess the application and the progression of wound healing in patients who received Sorbion sachet S or Sorbion Sana wound dressings.

Method: A convenience sample of patients with chronic wounds was recruited from nursing homes or community wound clinics in the Netherlands and the UK. Wound surface area measurements, pain assessment using a visual analogue scale score, patient affect (mood) and social interaction were recorded using a specifically designed evaluation template.
