From Bystander-to-Upstander: A Novel Intervention Framework to Address Microaggressions in a Pediatric Academic Medical Center.

Microaggressions undermine health professionals' performance in patient care, research, and education. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an intervention addressing microaggressions in healthcare settings by empowering bystanders to act as upstanders across an academic medical center (AMC). This was achieved through an educational intervention that included a novel framework, didactics, video demonstrations, and practice with realistic scenarios.

Referral patterns for common surgical procedures in Ontario: a cross-sectional population-level study.

Background: Little is known about the existing structure and function of referral networks in the prevalent referral system for specialized surgical care in Canada, which is based on direct physician referral to specialists in a largely unmanaged referral marketplace. Our objective was to describe and analyze the referral networks of referring physicians and surgeons for common surgical procedures in Ontario, to better understand potential barriers to single-entry models.

Methods: We analyzed referral networks for patients between referring physicians and surgeons for 9 common scheduled surgical procedures from 2016 to 2019 using administrative data sources in Ontario.

Intraoperative surgical navigation improves margin status in advanced malignancies of the anterior craniofacial area: A prospective observational study with systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis.

The current scientific evidence suggests that surgical navigation (SN) can contribute to improve oncologic outcomes in sinonasal and craniofacial surgery. The present study investigated the feasibility of intraoperative SN and its role in improving the outcomes of surgically treated sinonasal and craniofacial tumors. This prospective study compared navigation-guided surgery for sinonasal or craniofacial malignancies with a pair-matched cohort (1:2 matching) of patients operated without SN.

Multiplexed activity metabolomics for isolation of filipin macrolides from a hypogean actinomycete.

Chemical and biological stimulus screening in a hypogean actinomycete was used to elicit secondary metabolism. Optimal biosynthesis of bioactive natural products was identified using Multiplexed Activity Profiling for determining dose-dependent activity via six single-cell biological readouts. Bioactive extracts were fractioned to establish candidate compounds for isolation using Multiplexed Activity Metabolomics by correlating microtiter well-isolated phenotypes and extracted ion current peaks.

Leveraging Narrative Reflective Writing to Teach Nursing Students About Social Determinants of Health by Harnessing "Small Moments".

Background: There is increasing recognition that social determinants of health (SDOH) profoundly affect health outcomes. Frontline nurses must grasp how SDOH shape health disparities and inequities.

Purpose: This paper describes an innovative pedagogical approach that leverages didactic, experiential, and reflective methods, specifically a "small moments" writing activity, to enhance students' understanding of SDOH.
