Neighborhoods or residential environments have physical and social attributes which may contribute to inequalities in the overweight and obesity pandemic. We examined the longitudinal associations of baseline neighborhood-level income and racial residential segregation (using the Gi* statistic: low, medium, high) with changes in body mass index (BMI in kg/m), using geocoded data from 1821 civil servants in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, followed-up for approximately 13 years (baseline wave 1: 1999, wave 2: 2001-2002, wave 3: 2006-2007, wave 4: 2012-2013). Linear mixed effects models using BMI measured in all four study waves were performed, accounting for gender, race, length of residence, education and time-dependent age, and per capita family income.

Visual deficit after spinal surgery is rare but tragic. The main causes include external eye injury, cortical blindness, central retinal artery occlusion, and ischemic optic neuropathy. In scoliosis surgery, this complication potentially arises from prolonged surgical time, high blood loss, prone position, hydroelectrolytic imbalance, and cerebrospinal fluid loss.

Understanding geochemical source-sink relationships is an important aspect for developing background values of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in a lake basin. This approach was studied in the Araguaia belt of Amazonia, Brazil. A total of 96 sediments (from 13 lake cores LA1-LA13), 36 surface soils, and 19 catchment rocks were collected in 2022 and chemical analysis of these samples was performed in the fine fraction (< 177 μm) using XRF and ICP-MS.

The reported incidence of meniscal tears in the pediatric age group has increased because of increased sports participation and more widespread use of MRI. Meniscal injury is one of the most commonly reported internal derangements in skeletally immature knees and can be associated with early degenerative joint disease leading to disability. The pediatric meniscus has particularities, and knowledge of normal anatomy, anatomical variations, and the patterns of meniscal injury in the pediatric age group is essential to provide a correct diagnosis.
