- Ambulatory oxygen is vital for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have low oxygen levels during physical activity, especially if traditional testing may miss their true needs.
- A study reviewed treadmill exercise tests for 329 IPF patients and 2,343 COPD patients to measure their oxygen flow requirements, finding that IPF patients typically need more oxygen than COPD patients at peak exertion.
- Notably, while some patients didn't need oxygen during moderate exercise, a significant portion (49% of IPF and 24% of COPD patients) required it when pushed to their highest level of exertion, highlighting the limitations of standard testing.
Introduction: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterized by diffuse lung injury. The impact of pre-existing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema on ARDS pathogenesis is not well characterized.
Methods: Secondary analysis of ARDS patients enrolled in the Acute Lung Injury Registry and Biospecimen Repository at the University of Pittsburgh between June 2012 and September 2021.
Introduction: Psychiatric comorbidities have proven a consistent challenge. Recent approaches emphasize the need to move away from categorical descriptions of symptom clusters towards a dimensional view of mental disorders. From the perspective of phenomenological psychopathology, this shift is not enough, as a more detailed understanding of patients' lived experience is necessary as well.
