Analysis of autophagy gene polymorphisms in Spanish patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth cancer on incidence worldwide. Tobacco and alcohol consumption are the most classical risk factors associated with its development. Autophagy process has a dual effect both in tumourigenesis and tumour suppressing activity.

Obstructive uropathy secondary to inguinal bladder hernia: case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of a large inguino-scrotal bladder hernia presenting with obstructive lower urinary symptoms and causing massive unilateral uretero-hydronephrosis with ipsilateral renal function deterioration. Careful anamnesis and computer tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen and pelvis were important for the diagnosis. Open surgery with mesh hernia repair was successful.

Renal pelvis flap--guide for ureteral spatulation and handling during dismembered pyeloplasty.

Introduction: To present a technical modification of the classic dismembered pyeloplasty technique. We have implemented it in 112 pyeloplasties performed during the past 15 years.

Technical Considerations: The technical modification is based on a renal pelvis flap kept undetached from the ureteropelvic junction, and consequently from the ureter, until near completion of the new ureteropelvic anastomosis.

Liposarcoma of the perineum and scrotum.

A case of liposarcoma of the perineum and scrotum, which presented as a huge haematoma and was left in place for three years prior to excision, is presented. The patient was treated by wide excision of the tumour, orchiopexy to the inguinal region and radiotherapy. To date, 30 months following surgery, the patient is completely asymptomatic and no tumour recurrence is evident either on physical and rectal examinations or on chest X-rays, ultrasonography and abdominal and pelvic computerized tomography.

Perinephric inflammatory process following extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

A patient with large branched staghorn calculi was treated with ESWL. She suffered from recurrent urinary tract infections. Following ESWL she developed a perinephric abscess, which necessitated percutaneous drainage.
