Successful treatment approaches for tumoral calcinosis in children and young people: A condition of diverse pathogenesis.

Background: Ectopic calcification is inappropriate biomineralization of soft tissues occurring due to genetic or acquired causes of hyperphosphataemia and rarely in normophosphataemic individuals. Tumoral Calcinosis (TC) is a rare metabolic bone disorder commonly presenting in childhood and adolescence with periarticular extra-capsular calcinosis. Three subtypes of TC have been recognised: primary hyperphosphataemic familial TC (HFTC), primary normophosphataemic familial TC and secondary TC most commonly seen in chronic renal failure.

Citizen science data suggest that a novel rig improves landing rate and reduces injury and handling time in recreational angling with artificial lures in Baltic pike ().

The optimal terminal gear in hook-and-line recreational fishing maximizes landing rates and minimizes injury to the fish because some fish will be released after capture. We designed a novel rig configuration in artificial lure fishing for top predators and examined its effectiveness in angling for Baltic northern pike () using a citizen science approach based on observational data collected from volunteer anglers in the field. The novel rig included two changes to traditional rig designs common to artificial lure angling.

Body composition in children with type 1 diabetes in the first year after diagnosis: relationship to glycaemic control and cardiovascular risk.

Introduction: Rapid weight gain is often observed following initiation of insulin therapy in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and girls are particularly at risk of becoming overweight. The authors evaluated body composition changes in children during the first year after diagnosis and related this to markers of cardiovascular risk.

Methods: Body mass index (BMI) and body composition measured by whole body dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) were assessed in 30 patients (18 boys) with T1DM 3-10 days after diagnosis, 6 weeks later and at 1 year, and on two occasions 1 year apart in 14 controls (8 boys).

Effects of fluid resuscitation with hypertonic saline dextrane or Ringer's acetate after nonhemorrhagic shock caused by pulmonary contusion.

Background: Injured lungs are sensitive to fluid resuscitation after trauma. Such treatment can increase lung water content and lead to desaturation. Hypertonic saline with dextran (HSD) has hyperosmotic properties that promote plasma volume expansion, thus potentially reducing these side effects.

Trauma attenuating backing improves protection against behind armor blunt trauma.

Background: Body armor is used by military personnel, police officers, and security guards to protect them from fatal gunshot injuries to the thorax. The protection against high-velocity weapons may, however, be insufficient. Complementary trauma attenuating backings (TAB) have been suggested to prevent morbidity and mortality in high-velocity weapon trauma.
