Palliative Care Referral Patterns and Implications for Standardization in Cardiac ICU.

Evidence suggests that pediatric palliative care involvement (PPC) is beneficial to medically complex patients. Historically, PPC involvement has been overlooked or delayed and varies by institution but PPC awareness has increased in cardiovascular ICUs (CVICU) and so we investigated frequency and timeliness of PPC referral for patients dying in ICU. Retrospective study of pediatric cardiac patients experiencing death in ICU to review PPC presence and timing of initial PPC, most recent PPC, and interventions, therapies, CPR, and presence of do-not-resuscitate DNR discussion.

Acoustic signature of plastic marine debris mimics the prey items of deep-diving cetaceans.

It is largely assumed that odontocetes voluntarily ingest plastic marine debris because they visually mistake it for prey. However, deep-diving whales do not rely on visual systems to forage and instead employ echolocation. Whether or not these whales misinterpret acoustic signals that lead to the accidental ingestion of plastic is unknown.

Radiographs are of limited use and low cost-effectiveness when combined with ultrasound for abdominal restaging in dogs with solid, soft tissue tumours.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to assess the frequency of detection of clinically relevant findings by abdominal radiographs and abdominal ultrasound during restaging of solid, soft tissue tumours in dogs and to determine the cost per clinically relevant finding for both modalities.

Materials And Methods: The medical records of 159 dogs which underwent a total of 223 restaging episodes following a diagnosis of a solid, soft tissue tumour within, or with potential for metastasis to, the abdomen were reviewed. Data collected from the sample dogs were reviewed for clinically relevant findings, including local recurrence, lymph node or intra-abdominal metastasis, and other changes that would influence prognosis or management.

Release of nanoparticle coatings additives from common surfaces via simulated dermal contact.

Both nanoparticles (NPs) and nano-enabled products have become widely available in consumer markets in the last decade. Surface coating including paints, stains, and sealants, have seen large increases in the inclusion of nanomaterials in their formulations to increase UV resistance, hydrophobicity, and scratch resistance. Currently, most literature studying the release of NPs and byproducts from coated surfaces has focused exclusively on lumber.

Contrast-enhanced mammography for surveillance in women with a personal history of breast cancer.

Purpose: Women with a personal history of breast cancer have an increased risk of subsequent breast malignancy and may benefit from more sensitive surveillance than conventional mammography (MG). We previously reported outcomes for first surveillance episode using contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), demonstrating higher sensitivity and comparable specificity to MG. We now report CEM performance for subsequent surveillance.
