The brain size of vertebrates represents a trade-off between natural selection for enhanced cognitive abilities and the energetic constraints of brain tissue production. Processing information efficiently can confer benefits, but it also entails time costs. Breeding strategies, encompassing timing of breeding onset and nest-site selection, may be related to brain size.

Article Synopsis
  • Very preterm infants (VPI) under 32 weeks are more likely to develop disorders that can be detected through specific assessments like the Prechtl General Movements Assessment (GMA) and the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-Third Edition (BSID-III).
  • The study analyzed GMs trajectories from preterm to fidgety age to see how they relate to later cognitive and motor outcomes, finding significant links between GMs and cognitive performance at 12 months.
  • Results suggest that tracking GMs and their tendencies could help identify infants at risk for cognitive issues early on, but further research with larger groups is necessary for more conclusive recommendations.

Background: A particular type of site fidelity is faithfulness to the nest site, where birds are not only reoccupying breeding territories but also reusing nests built in previous breeding seasons. Staying faithful to the nest site is believed to be an adaptive strategy, and based on the ability to predict an individual's own breeding success, a hypothesis of "win-stay:loose-switch" was proposed. In this study, we aimed to resolve which factors affect the nest-site fidelity of white stork Ciconia ciconia, species known for reusing nests available in the breeding sites.

Rapid identification of the causative pathogens of central nervous system infections is essential for providing appropriate management and improving patient outcomes. The performance of QIAstat-Dx Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) Panel-a multiplex PCR testing platform-in detecting pathogens implicated in meningitis and/or encephalitis was evaluated using BioFire FilmArray ME Panel as a comparator method. This multicenter study analyzed 585 retrospective residual cerebrospinal fluid specimens and 367 contrived specimens.
