To establish which factors influence performance and bird welfare during a fattening period and to identify those factors to be investigated during routine monitoring of farms by veterinary authorities, a questionnaire-based field study was conducted in districts of Lower Saxony, Germany, with the highest density of broiler chickens. Mortality and BW of farms with different stocking densities (≤33, 33.1-39, and >39 kg/m(2)) were investigated.

The authors report on the recent situation regarding the Animal Welfare Regulation of farmed Animals, which now has additional requirements for hen and pig husbandry, introduced by the amending regulation from 1st August 2006. In particular they describe, which parts of the Council Directive 91/630/EEC of 19th November 1991 with minimum standards for the protection of pigs is originally implemented and where the national legislation demands higher animal welfare standards.

Since several years, there are claims from various sides to introduce and establish test methods and approval procedures concerning mass-producted standard farm equipment and husbandry systems in Germany. Such a procedure should be closely related to practical conditions, feasible and promoting innovation. The aim is to improve animal welfare, to relieve the authorities of single case testing and to create legal confidence for both, manufacturers and livestock owners.
