The aim of this study was to: (1) determine the prevalence and patterns of lung dysfunction among transfusion dependent thalassemics; (2) determine the associated factors that might contribute to this problem. This was a cross-sectional study involving 66 patients with transfusion dependent thalassemia aged 10 years and above. All patients underwent physical examination, standardized pulmonary function tests including spirometry, lung volume, and the carbon monoxide diffusion capacity.

We describe a case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in a child. This case is unusual in that the illness was characterised by recurrent episodes rather than a monophasic course and that the choice of treatment was intravenous immunoglobulin over corticosteroids. The rapid and remarkable recovery is highlighted and a review of the treatment for this rare condition is discussed.

A term newborn infant developed hypovolaemic shock shortly after birth. She was pale with gross hepatomegaly. She required multiple boluses of intravenous fluids, blood products as well as inotropic support.
