Vision contributes to foraging, territorial and reproductive behavior in sunfish. In these contexts, sunfish need to perceive single targets, such as prey items or body markings from either conspecifics or individuals of other sunfish species, from some distance. We determined the single target acuity of six common sunfish in a behavioral experiment to assess whether the visual abilities of sunfish correspond with behavioral observations or reactive distance measures, and thus assessed the limits of vision for the mentioned behaviors.

Methods: Ins2± mice and especially Ins2±, adenosine A1 receptor knockout mice (Ins2±, A1AR-/-) are mouse models with a phenotype of diabetic nephropathy. Aged mice (at ~40 weeks) were assessed for glomerular filtration barrier function by measuring albuminuria, glomerular filtration, glomerular damage by electron microscopy, and podocyte numbers by Wilms Tumor protein (WT-1) staining.
Methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), an organic acidemia characterized by metabolic instability and multiorgan complications, is most frequently caused by mutations in methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT). To define the metabolic adaptations in MMA in acute and chronic settings, we studied a mouse model generated by transgenic expression of Mut in the muscle. Mut-/-;TgINS-MCK-Mut mice accurately replicate the hepatorenal mitochondriopathy and growth failure seen in severely affected patients and were used to characterize the response to fasting.

Method: We have used the cirrhosis model of chronic bile duct ligation (BDL) to assess the response of renal blood flow to a change of blood pressure. We have measured renal haemodynamics in BDL rats.
The thick ascending limb (TAL) extends from the border of the inner medulla to the renal cortex, thus ascending through regions with wide differences in tissue solute and electrolyte concentrations. Structural and functional differences between TAL cells in the medulla (mTAL) and the cortex (cTAL) would therefore be useful to adapt TAL transport function to a changing external fluid composition. While mechanisms common to all TAL cells play a central role in the reclamation of about 25% of the NaCl filtered by the kidney, morphological features, Na / K -ATPase activity, NKCC2 splicing and phosphorylation do vary between segments and cells.
