The 2009 Institute of Medicine (IOM) GWG recommendations have largely been validated in Caucasian and mono-ethnic East Asian cohorts. Background: The incidence of silicosis has increased due to occupational silica exposure from artificial stone, with no treatments proven to halt or reverse the disease. Whole lung lavage (WLL) involves the instillation of fluid into the lungs to wash out silica particles and disease-causing inflammatory cells. This study aimed to determine the feasibility, safety, and possible benefit of WLL in patients with artificial stone silicosis.

  • Paecilomyces spp. are thermo-tolerant fungi that can cause various infections, notably in the paranasal sinuses and occasionally the ear, especially in immunocompromised individuals like diabetics.
  • A case study highlights a 41-year-old male army officer with a severe upper ear infection and intracranial abscess due to Paecilomyces, which was successfully treated through surgery and antifungal medication.
  • The findings underscore the importance of early detection and treatment of such rare fungal infections to prevent serious complications and differentiate them from similar conditions like cholesteatoma.

Singapore has seen an increase in norovirus outbreaks in preschools from 2019 to 2022 primarily due to person-to-person transmission. This study describes the use of compartmental susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered (SEIR) modelling to simulate the spread of norovirus among preschool children in a classroom setting. Different intervention measures, such as isolation of infected preschoolers, handwashing and surface decontamination were modelled to quantify their effectiveness at reducing the number of children infected.
