Sub-Tenon's Block in Patients with Previous Encircling Band Surgery-A Feasibility Study.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing aerosol-generating procedures became fundamental, particularly in ophthalmic surgeries traditionally performed under general anesthesia (GA). Regional anesthesia, such as sub-Tenon's block (STB), is widely used in vitreoretinal surgeries, offering a safer alternative by avoiding airway manipulation. However, the altered orbital anatomy in patients with previous scleral explant surgery creates unique challenges to STB application.

Dynamical theory of complex systems with two-way micro-macro causation.

In many complex systems encountered in the natural and social sciences, mechanisms governing system dynamics at a microscale depend upon the values of state variables characterizing the system at coarse-grained, macroscale (Goldenfeld and Woese, 2011, Noble et al., 2019, and Chater and Loewenstein, 2023). State variables, in turn, are averages over relevant probability distributions of the microscale variables.

Risk factors for violent behaviour before and after the onset of schizophrenia spectrum disorder: A naturalistic case-control study in the Netherlands.

Background: Risk factors for violent behaviour may differ depending on whether this begins before (VBO) or after (VAO) the onset of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. However, previous studies have been limited by selective samples of forensic patients and crude outcome measures.

Methods: The sample consisted of 1013 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders recruited from various treatment settings across the Netherlands.

Change in Clinical Risk Factors During Stay and Treatment in a Penitentiary Psychiatric Center.

This study examines the changes in clinical risk factors among individuals treated in Dutch Penitentiary Psychiatric Centers (PPCs). Using data from 874 patients with diverse psychiatric disorders, clinical risk factors were assessed at admission and discharge. Slight but significant improvements were observed in most risk factors, particularly psychotic symptoms, over an average stay of approximately 6 months.

Starvation and infection: The role of sickness-associated anorexia in metabolic adaptation during acute infection.

Sickness-associated anorexia, the reduction in appetite seen during infection, is a widely conserved and well-recognized symptom of acute infection, yet there is very little understanding of its functional role in recovery. Anorexic sickness behaviours can be understood as an evolutionary strategy to increase tolerance to pathogen-mediated illness. In this review we explore the evidence for mechanisms and potential metabolic benefits of sickness-associated anorexia.
