A number of experts recommend the use of insulin for patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) who fail to respond to diet, exercise, and oral hypoglycemics, even when the patient is morbidly obese. This article describes the use of insulin in two obese patients with NIDDM whose obesity worsened following the institution of insulin therapy. In some cases the risk for increased obesity and its complications following the institution of insulin may offset the potential benefits of insulin therapy itself.

Quantitative rate and equilibrium constants for the hydrolysis of the lactone (ring E) in camptothecin (1) and analogues (2-5, all substituted in the A ring of 1) at 25 degrees C in aqueous solution were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-visible detection and by UV-visible spectrophotometry. It was shown that the lactone was converted to the carboxylate in a pH-dependent equilibrium. No major differences were observed in rate and equilibrium constants for 1-5, a result suggesting that the mechanism of lactone hydrolysis is independent of a variety of substituents on the A ring.

Between 1980 and 1985, over 16,000 immigrants from Ethiopia, a population at high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, arrived in Israel. The present study was designed to provide epidemiological information necessary for developing prevention strategies against HBV infection. Among the 144 subjects studied in an absorption center in Israel, only 32% had no detectable HBV markers and were therefore susceptible to infection.

Using high resolution autoradiographic techniques, the distribution of radioactivity in forebrain and brainstem was assessed after IV injection of 3H-impramine or 3H-desipramine. Results were compared with regional binding of the drugs to brain sections in vitro. Similar topographic binding of 3H-imipramine and 3H-desipramine was observed in vitro among brain regions, except in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and locus coeruleus, where binding was greater for 3H-desipramine.

Previous studies using dissociated cell cultures of fetal rat brain have revealed considerable regional diversity as well as sex steroid-independent sex differences in developmental schedules of dopaminergic neurons. Because these phenomena might be related to glial heterogeneity, cultures of dissociated male and female diencephalon, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon of gestational day 14 rats were investigated with respect to the development of astrocytic markers. Cultures were incubated for 3-8 days in vitro (DIV) in serum-supplemented or serum-free medium.
