Comparing global and local maps of the Caribbean pine forests of Andros, home of the critically endangered Bahama Oriole.

Forest loss is occurring at alarming rates across the globe. The pine rockland forests of Andros, The Bahamas, likely represent some of the largest stands of Bahamian subspecies of Caribbean pine in the world. Given the unique species that inhabit these pine forests, such as the endemic and critically endangered Bahama Oriole, monitoring habitats on Andros is crucial to inform conservation planning.

[Estimation of perioperative cardiac risk by means of dipyridamole myocardial scintigraphy in patients undergoing vascular surgery on the lower limbs].

Unlabelled: The vascular surgery of lower limbs has an increased cardiac risk that is related to the special surgical procedure and the high risk patient population. The myocardium scintigraphy after the administration of dipyridamole is a reliable stress testing, even despite claudication complaints. The authors performed dipyridamole stressed quantitative MIBI scintigraphy in 35 patients with peripheral arterial disease for the assessment of prognostic importance of the test.

Technetium-99m sestamibi scintigraphy for the assessment of lower extremity ischaemia in peripheral arterial disease.

Technetium-99m sestamibi was used for functional investigation of the muscle perfusion of lower extremities in 35 patients with peripheral vascular disease. The aim was to test what useful information could be obtained by additional imaging of the legs in patients referred for risk stratification with dipyridamole myocardial scanning. Posterior images were acquired over the thighs and calves after postocclusive reactive hyperaemia and at rest.

[The role of peritoneal lavage in the surgical treatment of acute necrotizing pancreatitis].

Treatment of patients for acute pancreatitis is reported in this paper, with particular reference being made to the effectiveness of peritoneal lavage. Aetiological factors as well as surgical indications and techniques are communicated against the background of ten years of experience. Results are separately reported for two periods under review, with no peritoneal lavage used in the first phase.

Ultrastructure of extracellular matrix of embryonic chick limb bud cartilage.

The ultrastructure of the extracellular matrix of chick limb buds at stages 24--36 was investigated with the electron microscope and with polarization microscopic evaluation of topo-optical reactions. Two types of extracellular matrix structures could be distinguished. In the primary matrix of presumptive cartilaginous areas at developmental stage 25, topo-optical reactions revealed polycarboxylated glycosaminoglycans oriented parallel to the cell surface.
