Clinical venous thromboembolism following joint surgery: effect of extended thromboprophylaxis on its annual frequency and postoperative pattern over 22 years.

We describe annual incidences and 6-month postoperative patterns of clinical venous thromboembolism (VTE) in 9078 patients undergoing major joint surgery in a Scandinavian hospital. In cohort I (1989-1999), low-molecular-weight heparin thromboprophylaxis for 7 to 10 days was uniformly introduced, 5-week thromboprophylaxis becoming routine after total hip replacement (THR), partially applied after hip fracture surgery (HFS), but not used after total knee replacement (TKR) thereafter (2003-2011; cohort II). Mean annual VTE incidence was lower in cohort II than in cohort I after THR and HFS but not after TKR.

Case report: Spontaneous regression of a supraclavicular thoracic duct cyst: case report with a follow-up of 25 years.

This article is a follow-up of a previously reported case of a thoracic duct cyst. In 1982, a left supraclavicular swelling appeared spontaneously in a 55-year-old man. The mass was located near the lower part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

[Choanal atresia--experience with early surgery].

Introduction: Prior to 1982, patients in our department with choanalatresia were operated by the transpalatinal approach. To eliminate the risk of insufficient transpalatine growth, only older children were operated.

Material And Methods: From 1982 we have chosen to operate as soon as symptoms occurred, usually at an earlier age.

The effect of cetirizine on symptoms and signs of nasal polyposis.

Forty-five patients with residual or recurrent nasal polyposis after ethmoidectomy were treated with either cetirizine at twice the daily recommended (20 mg) dose or placebo for three months. The number and size of polyps remained unchanged during the study period. Cetirizine was found to reduce nasal sneezing and rhinorrhoea effectively.

Phenotypic distribution of T cells in human nasal mucosa differs from that in the gut.

Phenotypic and functional studies are required to understand the immunoregulatory role of mucosal T cells. Information about T cells in the human upper respiratory tract is limited and conflicting. Therefore, we phenotyped T cells in nasal mucosa by means of multicolor in situ immunofluorescence.
