Objectives: We evaluate long-term symptomatic improvement in vascular ring patients who underwent thoracoscopic division at a single quaternary pediatric surgery center.
Methods: All pediatric patients who underwent vascular ring division without Kommerell's diverticulum resection between 01/2007-12/2022 were included. Surgeries were performed by pediatric general and thoracic surgeons.
Hirschsprung disease is a common disease treated by surgeons using different approaches. One approach is eponymously ascribed to Franco Soave and Scott Boley involving a pull-through of ganglionated colon through a distal portion of aganglionated rectum. However, more recent evidence has shown that this same technique was described twelve years before by Asa Yancey, a black surgeon.

Through an examination of literature and art history over the past several centuries, we can better understand what it is to be a physician and meet the needs of our patients by recognizing suffering and creating hope. Literature and historical works of art are rich in the description of children and families confronting disease and through close examination of both types of media, we can better empathize and understand our patients and families when confronted by illness.
