Unlabelled: The use of restraints in The Netherlands has mainly been studied in psychiatric, geropsychiatric, elderly, and retarded persons. No study is known on this subject in Dutch general hospitals. The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence of the use of physical restraints and side-rails and factors associated with restraint and side-rail use in a Dutch teaching hospital.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Purpose: Patients with stroke are at a high risk for falling. We assessed the fall incidence and risk factors for patients hospitalized as the result of an acute stroke.
Methods: We studied a cohort of 720 stroke patients from 23 hospitals in The Netherlands.
Falls occur frequently in patients with a stroke and have serious consequences: discharge delays and hip fractures can result. In order to evaluate the impact of nursing workload on stroke-patient falls, we assessed the patients per nurse ratio in a detailed case-control study carried out in nine Dutch hospitals. There were 49 first falls by 349 stroke patients.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) polyradiculomyelitis was diagnosed in 4 of 241 consecutive neurologically assessed human immunodeficiency virus type (HIV-1) seropositive patients. CMV-related neurologic disease was suspected on clinical grounds and was subsequently confirmed by CMV culture from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and/or CMV in situ hybridization on specific specimens. All four patients showed CSF pleocytosis with predominance of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs).
