Administration of 17beta-estradiol to castrated MORs and FORs and ovariectomized ewes caused an initial reduction in LH secretion followed for 12-20 h by a surge release of LH in the ewes. Pregnant ewes (n = 10) were treated with the aromatase inhibitor 1,4,6- androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD) during the period of gestation when the sheep brain is maximally sensitive to the behavior-modifying effects of exogenous testosterone (embryonic d 50-80; 147 d is term). We isolated mRNA from the hypothalamus-preoptic area (HPOA), amygdala (AMYG), medulla (MD), frontal cortex (FCTX) and olfactory bulbs (OB) of fetal sheep that were delivered on day 64 of gestation. Using a ribonuclease protection assay and species-specific cRNA probes, we measured mRNA expression levels of androgen receptor (AR), estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) and progesterone receptor (PR).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis research tested comparative effects of parent and peer support on adolescent substance use (tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana) with data from 2 assessments of a multiethnic sample of 1,826 adolescents, mean age 12.3 years. Multiple regression analyses indicated that parental support was inversely related to substance use and that peer support was positively related to substance use, as a suppression effect.
