Timely and accurate detection and identification of species are crucial for monitoring wildlife for conservation and management. Technological advances, including connectivity of camera traps to mobile phone networks and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for automated species identification, can potentially improve the timeliness and accuracy of species detection and identification. Adoption of this new technology, however, is often seen as cost-prohibitive as it has been difficult to calculate the cost savings or qualitative benefits over the life of the program.

The covalent combination of a cyanine dye (IR-783) with a tetraphenyl porphyrin unit through an ether linkage results in a photoactive system capable of producing singlet oxygen. The synthesis, characterization and photophysical properties of the resulting novel free base porphyrin-cyanine conjugate named TPPO-IR-783 (TOI) is reported. Excited state properties were studied in various solvents with differing polarity.

In South Africa, where native forests are naturally fragmented, forest-dependent birds have undergone range declines since 1992, most notably among insectivores. These insectivores appear sensitive to the quality of natural matrix habitats, and it is unknown whether transformation of the landscape matrix has disrupted gene flow in these species.
