Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a fast-acting, highly effective, and safe treatment for medication-resistant depression. Historically, the clinical benefits of ECT have been attributed to generating a controlled seizure; however, the underlying neurobiology is understudied and remains largely unresolved. Using optical neuroimaging to probe neural activity and hemodynamics in a mouse model of ECT, we demonstrated that a second brain event follows seizure: cortical spreading depolarization (CSD).

The system uses a single wavelength of 785 nm and a single detector to illustrate the capability, but is built in a modular fashion to make it easily expandable to additional wavelengths and detectors. The design incorporates methods to allow software-based control over the system operating frequency, laser diode output amplitude, and detector gain.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Pediatric psychologists have unique expertise to contribute to the care of youth with serious illnesses yet are not routinely integrated into pediatric palliative care (PPC) teams. To better define the role and unique skillset of psychologists practicing in PPC, support their systematic inclusion as part of PPC teams, and advance trainee knowledge of PPC principles and skills, the PPC Psychology Working Group sought to develop core competencies for psychologists in this subspecialty.
Methods: A Working Group of pediatric psychologists with expertise in PPC met monthly to review literature and existing competencies in pediatrics, pediatric and subspecialty psychology, adult palliative care, and PPC subspecialties.
A co-registered speckle contrast optical tomography and frequency domain-diffuse optical tomography system has been designed for imaging total hemoglobin concentration, blood oxygenation, and blood flow with the future aim of monitoring Jones fractures of the fifth metatarsal. Experimental validation was performed using both tissue-mimicking phantoms and cuff occlusion experiments. Results of these tissue phantom experiments ensure accurate recovery of three-dimensional distributions of optical properties and flow.
