Background: The COVID-19 pandemic posed several challenges for surgical training, including the suspension of many in-person teaching sessions in lieu of webinars. As restrictions have eased, both prepandemic and postpandemic training methods should be used.

A 43-year-old woman presented with a presumed lower respiratory tract infection, with symptoms of persistent cough, lethargy, fevers and night sweats. Initial general practitioner assessment revealed raised C reactive protein and a leucocytosis comprising both a neutrophilia and an eosinophilia. The patient was initially treated for bacterial pneumonia.

Background: Outcomes for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with persistent hypercapnic respiratory failure are improved by long-term home non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Provision of home-NIV presents clinical and service challenges. Ventilator-associated pneumonia is the most common healthcare-associated infection in mechanically ventilated patients. Despite this, accurate diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia is difficult owing to the variety of criteria that exist. In this prospective national audit, we aim to quantify the existence of patients with suspected ventilator-associated pneumonia that would not be detected by our standard healthcare-associated infection screening process.
