A novel, biodegradable and reversible polyelectrolyte platform for topical-colonic delivery of pentosan polysulphate.

The goal of the present work was to develop a swellable hydrogel colonic delivery system, which would maximise the availability of the therapeutic agent at a site of inflammation, especially where the water is scarce. A novel method was developed to manufacture a biodegradable and reversible polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) containing chitosan and poly acrylic-acid (PAA). The PEC was analysed using FTIR and DSC, which confirmed the formation of non-permanent swollen gel-network at an alkaline pH.

Pharmacological thromboprophylaxis is increasingly being used after caesarean section to prevent venous thromboembolism. Although a variety of low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) have been used no comparative study exists on their effects on the haemostatic system in this situation. Furthermore, their antithrombotic effect may be mediated through effects other than their inhibitory effect on activated factor X.

Abnormal coagulation and deep venous thrombosis in patients with advanced cancer.

Many studies have demonstrated increased coagulation activation in cancer patients and have shown evidence of chronic, low-grade disseminated intravascular coagulation, although most patients remained asymptomatic. In general, patients have not been screened for deep venous thrombosis (DVT). We screened 98 patients with advanced malignancy for DVT using light reflection rheography.

Activated protein C sensitivity, protein C, protein S and coagulation in normal pregnancy.

A prospective study of activated protein C sensitivity, protein C, protein S, and other coagulation factors in 239 women during normal pregnancy was carried out. Protein C activity appeared unaffected by gestation, although an elevation of protein C activity was observed in the early puerperium. A fall in total and free protein S with increasing gestation was observed.
