Echidna Splenule: A Case Study of Continuous Splenogonadal Fusion.

Splenogonadal fusion (SGF) is a rare congenital anomaly of an aberrant accessory spleen-gonad connection. We present a rare case of continuous splenogonadal fusion in a full-term male with a left undescended testis, multiple congenital limb anomalies, and syndromic facies. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed the "Echidna Splenule," a snake-like intraperitoneal splenule coursing from the spleen along the left paracolic region and engulfing an atrophic intra-abdominal testis preventing spontaneous descent and distally herniating into the left open internal inguinal ring.

The DBP exposome: Development of a new method to simultaneously quantify priority disinfection by-products and comprehensively identify unknowns.

Disinfected drinking water contains hundreds of disinfection by-products (DBPs) that are formed by the reaction of disinfectants with natural and anthropogenic organic matter, bromide, and iodide. Understanding what these DBPs are is important because millions of people worldwide consume drinking water every day, and human epidemiologic studies have reported cancer, miscarriage, and birth defects from consuming such waters. While more than 600 DBPs are reported in the literature, very few studies quantify complete classes of chlorinated, brominated, and iodinated DBPs.

Evaluation of multiple alternative instrument platforms for targeted and non-targeted dioxin and furan analysis.

The use of gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometers (GC-HRMS) is well established for dioxin and furan analysis. However, the use of gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole (MS/MS) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometers with atmospheric pressure ionization (API) and traditional electron ionization (EI) for dioxin and furan analysis is emerging as a viable alternative to GC-HRMS screening. These instruments offer greater versatility in the lab for a wider range of compound identification and quantification as well as improved ease of operation.

Dioxin-like contaminants are no longer a risk to the American eel (Anguilla rostrata) in Lake Ontario.

The embryotoxicity of extracts of American eels (Anguilla rostrata) was measured to determine whether maternally derived contaminants contribute to the declining recruitment of eels to Lake Ontario. Sexually maturing, large yellow and silver eels were sampled in 2007 and 2008 from 5 locations in eastern Canada, including Lake Ontario; positive controls included eels from the Hudson River, United States, and Canal Dessel-Schoten, Belgium (European eel, Anguilla anguilla). Japanese medaka eggs were injected immediately after fertilization with 1 or 10 nL of eel extract and, after 12 d, scored for signs of toxicity.
