Article Synopsis
  • * A study compared two training models—the Blue Phantom and NeedleTrainer—with 47 novice participants, assessing their performance and feedback on both simulators.
  • * Results showed that while the Blue Phantom had longer time-to-target, it provided a 100% success rate and lower complications, contributing to higher learning satisfaction and confidence compared to the NeedleTrainer.

Background: A logbook system is essential to ensure standardized competency in medical education. This survey will provide the first overview of our current logbook and can serve as an initial proposal for improvement to a more relevant and valuable tool to assess our postgraduate training programme.

Methods: This survey was conducted among all Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) anaesthetic trainees.

fungemia is rare and highly resistant to antifungal therapy. We herein report a case involving a 31-year-old male admitted after a high-velocity road traffic accident. He sustained a grade IV liver injury with right hepatic vein thrombosis, which necessitated an urgent laparotomy.

At our institution, we occasionally see pregnant patients in the later stages of pregnancy who present with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension caused by congenital heart disease. The physiological changes in pregnancy may worsen the cardiovascular status leading to heart failure which is associated with a high incidence of morbidity and mortality. A scheduled caesarean section in such patients ensures delivery in a controlled environment, avoiding prolonged labour, which is detrimental.

Background: A feeding tube (FT) is routinely placed in critically ill patients, and its correct placement is confirmed with a chest X-ray (CXR), which is considered the gold standard. This study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography (USG) in verifying FT placement compared to a CXR in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Method: This was a prospective single-blind study conducted on patients admitted to the ICU of a tertiary hospital in Malaysia.

is a rare pathogen leading to nosocomial and central nervous system infections. Despite having a low virulence and being a rare organism to cause bacteremia, it can evolve into a multidrug-resistant organism and lead to mortality and morbidity in the intensive care setting. A 64-year-old male gardener was presented with extensive acute subarachnoid hemorrhage with intraventricular extension causing hydrocephalus requiring embolization and coiling following a cerebral angiogram, which showed bilateral posterior circulation aneurysm and left anterior circulation aneurysm.

Background: The serratus plane block is an effective technique for providing analgesia to patients undergoing breast surgery.

Methods: This prospective, double-blind, randomized study enrolled 60 female patients scheduled for unilateral mastectomy and axillary clearance. The patients received either a superficial serratus plane block or deep serratus plane block.

Background and Objectives: Shivering is a common complication of subarachnoid block (SAB). Magnesium sulphate has been proven to be effective in preventing shivering. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and adverse effects in hemodynamic parameters between 50 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg of intravenous magnesium sulphate for prevention of shivering post-subarachnoid block.

Background/aim: Regional anesthesia for surgery is associated with increased anxiety for patients. This study aimed to compare the effect of propofol and dexmedetomidine infusion on perioperative anxiety during regional anesthesia.

Materials And Methods: Eighty-four patients were randomly divided into two groups receiving either study drug infusion.

Background: This prospective, randomized, single blind, single operator study was conducted to compare hemodynamic responses when endotracheal intubation was performed using the Bonfils intubation fibrescope versus the C-MAC videolaryngoscope.

Method: Forty-four ASA I patients aged between 18 and 60 years, scheduled for elective surgery requiring endotracheal intubation were recruited. They were randomized into the Bonfils group or C-MAC group.

Background And Objective: To evaluate the ability of anaesthetic trainee doctors compared to nursing anaesthetic assistants in identifying the cricoid cartilage, applying the appropriate cricoid pressure and producing an adequate laryngeal inlet view.

Methods: Eighty-five participants, 42 anaesthetic trainee doctors and 43 nursing anaesthetic assistants, were asked to complete a set of questionnaires which included the correct amount of force to be applied to the cricoid cartilage. They were then asked to identify the cricoid cartilage and apply the cricoid pressure on an upper airway manikin placed on a weighing scale, and the pressure was recorded.

Background: This study was conducted to determine if intravenous dexamethasone combined with caudal block was able to prolong post-operative analgesia in pediatric daycare surgeries.

Methods: Sixty four ASA I or II children aged 3 to 10 year old scheduled for daycare open unilateral herniotomy received general anesthesia and caudal block using 0.25% levobupivacaine 0.

Objective: The basis for the transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block involves infiltration of a local anesthetic into the neurofascial plane between the internal oblique and the transversus abdominis muscles, causing a regional block that spreads between the L1 and T10 dermatomes. Thus, the TAP block is said to be suitable for lower abdominal surgery. This study was designed to compare the analgesic efficacy of two different concentrations of ropivacaine for TAP block in patients undergoing appendectomy.
