Discrete-Event Simulation Modeling of Critical Care Flow: New Hospital, Old Challenges.

Objectives: As the demand for critical care beds rises each year, hospitals must be able to adapt. Delayed transfer of care reduces available critical care capacity and increases occupancy. The use of mathematic modeling within healthcare systems has the ability to aid planning of resources.

Mode of presentation rather than the 'weekend effect' is a major determinant of in-hospital mortality.

Background: The influence of patient demographics and mode of admission on the 'weekend effect' remains unclear. This study examins the relationship between day of admission, patient demographics, mode of presentation and survival.

Methods: Hospital admissions over a three-year period were studied.

The aim of this study was to improve emergency theatre efficiency via the introduction of a theatre booking form and morning briefing meeting. Process mapping was used to engage staff and consider if the emergency theatre may benefit from the application of a structured process of communication. A theatre booking form and morning briefing meeting were implemented to promote change.
