Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the characteristics and prognostic indicators of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Nagasaki, Japan, focusing on how the location (sloped vs. accessible areas) affected outcomes.
  • Over a 10-year period with 4280 patients, the research found that prognosis was worse in sloped places, but these locations were not a significant prognostic indicator after analysis.
  • Factors such as age, bystander CPR, and first documented rhythm contributed more to survival chances, suggesting that improving bystander CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage could help in enhancing outcomes for OHCA in the region.

When responding to disasters, emergency preparedness is essential to ensure that disaster activities are performed smoothly, safely and efficiently. Investigations on the Fukushima accident revealed that lack of preparedness, poor communication and unsuitable emergency measures contributed to an inadequate emergency response to the nuclear disaster. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the establishment of a personal radiation exposure dose among Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) members in Japan who might be involved in the initial response to a nuclear disaster.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the factors affecting the intent of Disaster Medical Assistance Team members to engage with different types of hazards during disasters.
  • Results indicate that responders show significantly lower intent to engage with chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear, and explosive incidents compared to natural and man-made hazards.
  • It suggests that providing incentives and enhancing education/training may boost responders' engagement with hazardous situations and improve recruitment for disaster response efforts.

A 17-year-old boy with acute coronary syndrome was admitted to our hospital. He had xanthomas over his elbow and Achilles tendon and a high level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol; therefore, his initial diagnosis was familial hypercholesterolemia. However, a genetic analysis revealed a compound heterozygous mutation in the ABCG5 gene with a high serum level of sitosterol, leading to the diagnosis of sitosterolemia.

Willingness to participate in activities during a nuclear disaster situation among firefighters is low. Thus, we aimed to identify the factors affecting the intention to participate in nuclear disaster activities. A questionnaire survey was conducted among firefighter training students (n = 186) and firefighters (n = 410), and a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors affecting the intention to participate in nuclear disaster activities.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using D-dimer levels to detect venous thromboembolism (VTE) in severe trauma patients, as conventional reference values are lacking due to trauma-induced level increases.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 455 trauma patients over several years, applying specific screening criteria (hospital stay, increasing D-dimer, and elevated D-dimer levels) to identify those at risk for VTE.
  • Out of patients meeting the criteria, 34 were diagnosed with VTE via imaging, suggesting that the D-dimer screening criteria can help in efficiently identifying VTE in similar patient populations.
