Ultrafast excitation relaxation dynamics and energy-transfer processes in the light-harvesting complex II (LHC II) of Arabidopsis thaliana were examined at physiological temperature using femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Energy transfer from lutein to Chl a proceeded with a rate constant of k(ET) = 1.8-1.

Three-dimensional porphyrin-monolayer-protected gold clusters with different chain lengths (MPCs) have been prepared to examine the structure and photophysical properties, in comparison with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the porphyrins on a flat gold surface. The three-dimensional porphyrin MPCs exhibit electrochemical and photophysical properties that are much closer to those of a porphyrin reference compound in solution than those of two-dimensional porphyrin SAMs on the flat gold surface. The three-dimensional architectures of porphyrin MPCs with large surface area have improved the light-harvesting efficiency relative to the corresponding porphyrin SAM on the two-dimensional flat gold surface.

The novel (mu-alkoxo)bis(mu-carboxylato)diruthenium complex K[Ru(2)(dhpta)(mu-O(2)C-p-ZnTPP)(2)] 3 was prepared by simple ligand substitution reaction. Strong antiferromagnetic interaction between two Ru(III) ions of 3 was observed with a coupling constant of -425 approximately -404 cm(-1). The cyclic voltammogram of 3 can be explained in terms of superposition of those of ZnTPP-p-CO(2)H and K[Ru(2)(dhpta)(mu-O(2)CPh)(2)] 2, indicating no significant electrochemical interaction.

Systematic series of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes modified covalently with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of ferrocene-porphyrin-fullerene triads and porphyrin-fullerene dyads were designed to gain valuable insight into the development of molecular photovoltaic devices. The structures of SAMs on ITO have been investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The photoelectrochemical and photophysical (fluorescence lifetime and time-resolved transient absorption) properties were also determined.

A systematic series of ITO electrodes modified chemically with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of porphyrins and porphyrin-fullerene dyads have been designed to provide valuable insight into the development of artificial photosynthetic devices. First the ITO and gold electrodes modified chemically with SAMs of porphyrins with a spacer of the same number of atoms were prepared to compare the effects of energy transfer (EN) quenching of the porphyrin excited singlet states by the two electrodes. Less EN quenching was observed on the ITO electrode as compared to the EN quenching on the corresponding gold electrode, leading to remarkable enhancement of the photocurrent generation (ca.

The primary electron donor of photosystem (PS) II in the chlorophyll (Chl) d-dominated cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina was confirmed by delayed fluorescence (DF) and further proved by pigment contents of cells grown under several light intensities. The DF was found only in the Chl a region, identical to Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, and disappeared following heat treatment.

Recent progress in fundamental studies on multiporphyrin arrays has provided structural parameters for the molecular design of artificial light-harvesting antennae which mimic the wheel-like antenna complexes of photosynthetic purple bacteria. Covalent and noncovalent approaches have been employed for the construction of artificial light-harvesting multiporphyrin arrays. Such arrays are categorized into ring-shaped, windmill-shaped, star-shaped, and dendritic architectures.

A new methodology for preparing heteroporphyrin arrays in aqueous solution has been presented. The present method is based on the extremely strong ability of heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-beta-cyclodextrin (TMe-beta-CD) to include 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-substituted-phenyl)porphyrins (Por) affording trans-type 1:2 complexes of the porphyrins and TMe-beta-CD. Two different Por-per-O-methylated beta-CD (per-Me-beta-CD) conjugates were synthesized.

A series of star- and cone-shaped dendritic multiporphyrin arrays, (nPZn)4PFB and (nPZn)1PFB, respectively, that contain energy-donating dendritic zinc porphyrin (PZn) wedges of different numbers (n = 1, 3, and 7) of the PZn units, attached to an energy-accepting free-base porphyrin (PFB) core, were synthesized by a convergent growth approach. For the cone-shaped series ((nPZn)1PFB), the efficiency of energy transfer (phi ENT) from the photoexcited PZn units to the focal PFB core, as evaluated from the fluorescence lifetimes of the PZn units, considerably decreased as the generation number increased: (1PZn)1PFB (86%), (3PZn)1PFB (66%), and (7PZn)1PFB (19%). In sharp contrast, the star-shaped series ((nPZn)4PFB) all showed high phi ENT values: (1PZn)4PFB (87%), (3PZn)4PFB (80%), and (7PZn)4PFB (71%).

We investigated the reason for the absence of the long-wavelength PSI Chl a fluorescence at -196 degrees C in the cyanobacterium Gloeobacter violaceus using two methods: p-nitrothiophenol (p-NTP) treatment and time-resolved fluorescence spectra. The p-NTP treatment showed that PSII Chl a fluorescence was specifically affected in a manner similar to that for Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 and spinach chloroplasts, although there were no components modified by the p-NTP treatment, indicating an absence of the long-wavelength PSI Chl a fluorescence.

π-Electronic conjugation is not necessary to facilitate long-range energy migration and transfer: A rapid (k =1.04×10 s ) and efficient (Φ =71 %) energy transfer from the 28 photoexcited zinc porphyrin units to the focal free-base porphyrin unit occurs in a large, star-shaped dendritic multiporphyrin array in which the chromophore units are linked through flexible ether groups.

Up to 14 porphyrin rings are present in the title compounds 1, which are readily available with high regioselectivity from linear nickel-zinc porphyrins. Upon irradiation with light a rapid energy transfer from the peripheral porphyrin rings to the diporphyrin core takes place.
