Several reports indicate that there might be differences in clinical features between Asian and Western myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) cases. We analyzed refractory anemia (RA) in French-American-British (FAB) classification cases diagnosed in Japan and Germany to perform a more exact comparison between Asian and Western MDS types. In the first step, we analyzed agreement of morphologic diagnosis between Japanese and German hematologists.

Here we report a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for detecting Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli. The target for this LAMP method is the ipaH gene which is carried by both of the pathogens. The LAMP method efficiently detected the gene within 2 h at a minimal amount of bacteria (8 CFU) per reaction.

We studied 35 ears of 34 patients with congenital cholesteatoma who were operated between June 1992 and May 2003, focusing on the localization and progression of congenital cholesteatoma. Patients were 2 to 55 years of age. Congenital cholesteatoma was diagnosed based on two intraoperative findings: 1) no continuity between the tympanic membrane and cholesteatoma, 2) no presence of perforation, retraction, or granulation of the tympanic membrane.

Modulation of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 2B7 (UGT2B7)-catalyzed morphine glucuronidation by cytochrome P450 (P450) was studied. The effects of P450 isozymes on the kinetic parameters of UGT2B7-catalyzed glucuronidation of the morphine 3-hydroxyl group were examined by simultaneous expression of UGT2B7 and either CYP3A4, -1A2, or -2C9 in COS-1 cells. Although coexpression of CYP3A4 with UGT2B7 had little effect on Vmax, the Km was increased by about 9.

The distribution of eight putative adhesins that are not encoded in the locus for enterocyte effacement (LEE) in 139 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) of different serotypes was investigated by PCR. Five of the adhesins (Iha, Efa1, LPF(O157/OI-141), LPF(O157/OI-154), and LPF(O113)) are encoded in regions corresponding to genomic O islands of E. coli EDL933, while the other three adhesins have been reported to be encoded in the STEC megaplasmid of various serotypes (ToxB [O157:H7], Saa [O113:H21], and Sfp [O157:NM]).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the baculoviruses BmNPV and AcMNPV, which are genetically similar but infect different host cells.
  • Despite the nonoverlapping host ranges, both viruses were found to express most of their genes in both permissive and nonpermissive cells, albeit with timing and level differences.
  • The research established a method to analyze global gene expression trends during infection, highlighting the complexities of baculovirus interactions with different host cells.

The drug susceptibility and genes responsible for the drug resistance of Vibrio cholerae O1 isolated in Vietnam in 1995, 2000 and 2002 were studied. The strains isolated in 1995 were resistant to streptomycin and harboured the class I integron which contained the aadA1 gene responsible for streptomycin resistance. The strains isolated in 2000 were devoid of a class I integron but were multiple-drug resistant and harboured SXT constin, with several drug-resistant genes.

Monitoring drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has been carried out in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) since 1993. No methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains were detected until 2001 when two isolates were found: 01LP40, which was coagulase type IV, enterotoxin non-productive, and SCCmec (staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec) type III; and 01LP63 from a different hospital, which was coagulase type II, enterotoxin productive, and the SCCmec belonged to a new type.

Unlabelled: A 6-week-old immunocompetent girl developed protein-losing gastroenteropathy (PLGE) and retinitis associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. At presentation, CMV antigenaemia (6 cells/46,000 white blood cells) and its DNA were detected in the patient's blood and in the mother's milk. Intravenous ganciclovir and gamma-globulin rapidly ameliorated all symptoms and CMV antigenaemia disappeared.

This study was undertaken to determine whether the specific Th1- or Th2-cell response to varicella-zoster virus was induced predominantly by a mucosal adjuvant, cholera toxin, in mice. A commercially available live varicella vaccine (Oka strain) and cholera toxin or its B subunit were administered simultaneously via the nasal route. Delayed-type hypersensitivity to the Oka vaccine was induced, but the systemic neutralizing antibody response was low.
