Background: Laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS) is an effective treatment for gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). The utility of LECS for gastric GISTs of > 5 cm remains controversial. This study was performed to investigate the feasibility of LECS for gastric GISTs with a tumor diameter of >5 cm.

Transition-Metal-Free Intermolecular Hydrocarbonation of Styrenes Mediated by NaH/1,10-Phenanthroline.

A transition-metal-free intermolecular coupling reaction of halocompounds with styrenes in the presence of NaH and 1,10-phenanthroline was developed. This reaction afforded hydrocarbonated products with complete anti-Markovnikov selectivity. The method allows the use of a wide range of halocompounds, including aryl and alkyl halides, and good functional group tolerance.

Pleomorphic type undifferentiated gastric sarcoma, report of a case.

Reports on pleomorphic type of undifferentiated sarcoma (PUS) originating from the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach, are extremely rare. We herein report a case of pleomorphic type undifferentiated gastric sarcoma. The patient was a 67-year-old woman.

Gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma derived from hamartomatous inverted polyp with osteoclast-like giant cells: a case report.

Gastric carcinomas with lymphoid stroma (GCLS) are characterized by prominent stromal infiltration of lymphocyte and account for 1-4% of gastric cancers. Although, osteoclast-like giant cells (OGC) have been reported in some GCLS, OGCs in gastric tumors is exceedingly rare. A 60-year-old woman presented to our hospital after the finding of a positive fecal blood test during a routine medical check.

Vascular variations encountered during laparoscopic surgery for transverse colon, splenic flexure, and descending colon cancer: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery for cancer located in the transverse colon or splenic flexure is difficult because of vascular variability in this region and adjacent vital organs such as the pancreas, spleen, and duodenum.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study involved 51 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer at Tokushima University Hospital from July 2015 to December 2020. Variations of the middle colic artery (MCA), left colic artery (LCA), middle colic vein (MCV), and first jejunal vein (FJV) and short-term outcomes of laparoscopic surgery in patients with each vascular variation were evaluated.

Four cases of gastric adenocarcinoma and proximal polyposis of the stomach treated by robotic total gastrectomy.

Background: Gastric adenocarcinoma and proximal polyposis of the stomach (GAPPS) is a rare disease and characterized by a unique point mutation in the promoter 1B region of the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene. There are two aims in surgery for GAPPS; the first is prophylactic gastrectomy, and the second is excising concurrent cancer. We performed robotic total gastrectomy (RTG) for four cases of GAPPS.

Risk factors for postoperative ileus after diverting loop ileostomy closure.

Background: Postoperative ileus is one of the most common complications after diverting loop ileostomy closure. Some reports have investigated the risk factors for postoperative complications or ileus after ileostomy closure; however, these studies did not evaluate the index surgery sufficiently. In this study, we evaluated the risk factors, including the details of the index surgery, for ileus after diverting ileostomy closure.

The correlation of immunoscore and frailty in colorectal cancer.

Background: The Immunoscore is a useful prognostic and predictive factor for colorectal cancer. Frailty predicts overall and recurrence-free survival following resection of colorectal cancer, and the immunosuppressive state of frailty might affect tumor progression. This study investigated the relationship between the Immunoscore and frailty in colorectal cancer.

NaH-mediated direct C-H arylation in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline.

Transition-metal-free coupling of haloarenes with unactivated arenes has been developed in the presence of NaH and 1,10-phenanthroline. Various haloarenes bearing methyl, methoxy, halogen (fluoride, chloride, and bromide), cyano, trifluoromethyl, ester, and amide groups can be cross-coupled with unactivated arenes, or heteroarenes in this reaction.

Tetramethylammonium Fluoride Tetrahydrate-Mediated Transition Metal-Free Coupling of Aryl Iodides with Unactivated Arenes in Air.

Biaryls are important compounds with widespread applications in many fields. Tetramethylammonium fluoride tetrahydrate was found to promote the biaryl coupling of aryl iodides bearing electron-withdrawing substituents with unactivated arenes. The reaction takes place at temperatures between 100 and 150°C and can be applied to a wide range of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings, affording the products in moderate to high yields.

Autologous Transplantation of the Internal Limiting Membrane for Refractory Macular Hole following Ruptured Retinal Arterial Macroaneurysm: A Case Report.

Purpose: To report a case of macular hole (MH) secondary to a retinal arterial macroaneurysm (RAMA) which was successfully treated with an autologous transplantation of internal limiting membrane (ILM).

Case Report: An 87-year-old female presented with a sudden decrease in central vision in the right eye. A fundus examination revealed a RAMA in the superonasal macular region, a subretinal hemorrhage (SRH), involving the macula, and a sub-ILM hemorrhage.

Thermographic study on the preservability of heat effects of footbath with salt.

Infrared thermography provides a non-invasive and dynamic measure of heat. The thermal preservability effects of a salt footbath were evaluated by the infrared thermography technique. The subjects were 23 healthy college students.

Convulsive episodes in patients with group A xeroderma pigmentosum.

Objectives: To clarify the incidence of convulsive episodes in patients with group A xeroderma pigmentosum (XPA).

Materials And Methods: By investigating the history of convulsive episodes of our 33 XPA patients through either their medical charts or direct interviews with their caretakers.

Results: Five patients had several episodes of afebrile convulsion at ages older than 12.

Inhibitory effect of norditerpenes on LPS-induced TNF-alpha production from the Okinawan soft coral, Sinularia sp.

An ethanol (EtOH) extract of the soft coral (Sinularia sp.), collected in Okinawa, demonstrated a potent inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production by murine macrophage-like cells (RAW264.7).

Rapid-eye-movement sleep in jittery infants.

Background: The pathogenesis of neonatal jitteriness (JT) remains unknown. Neonatal JT could be one of the symptoms associated with drug withdrawal syndrome due to maternal medication. To study the influence of chemicals and environment on brain development in the fetal period, Swaab and Mirmiran proposed "behavioral teratology".

Immunohistochemical analysis of brainstem lesions in infantile spasms.

Whether the cerebral or subcortical lesions are involved in the pathogenesis in infantile spasms (IS) remains to be determined. To investigate the functional lesions of the subcortical structures in IS, the brainstem expression of neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and calcium-binding proteins in IS autopsy cases of lissencephaly and of perinatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE/IS) was investigated. The IS patients consisted of four subjects each of lissencephaly and HIE.

Nocturnal enuresis and the pontine reticular formation.

Objectives: To assess the previously proposed hypothesis that enuretic patients have a dysfunction in the pontine reticular formation.

Methods: In 18 patients with intractable nocturnal enuresis, rapid eye movement (REM)-related phasic chin muscle activity loss in REM sleep was examined by means of a single-night polysomnography.

Results: In 5 of 18 patients, this physiologically seen phenomenon was found to be disturbed.

Rapid eye movement sleep in breath holders.

One-night polysomnography was performed on seven subjects suffering from breath-holding spells, including one whose death was suggested to be a consequence of a breath-holding spell. The fatal case showed no rapid eye movements (REMs) during REM sleep, although he exhibited REMs during wakefulness. The average numbers of both REMs and bursts of REMs in REM sleep in the other six breath holders were significantly lower than those in age-matched controls.

ACTH activates rapid eye movement-related phasic inhibition during REM sleep in patients with infantile spasms.

Objectives: Phasic inhibition index (PII) is the rate of the simultaneous occurrence of phasic chin muscle activity (PCMA) and rapid eye movement bursts during rapid-eye-movement sleep (REMS). In naive patients with infantile spasms (IS), the PII value was found to reflect their prognosis. We studied the effects of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) on REMS components including PII in IS.

REM sleep components predict the response to initial treatment of infantile spasms.

Purpose: The phasic inhibition index (PII) is the rate of the simultaneous occurrence of rapid eye movement bursts (RBs) and phasic chin muscle activity (PCMA) during rapid eye movement sleep (REMS). PII is low insofar as physiologically occurring REM-related phasic inhibition acts on chin muscles. Previously we found that PII was significantly higher in patients with infantile spasms (ISs) who had a recurrence of convulsions than in patients with ISs who exhibited no recurrence.

[Auditory brainstem responses in group A xeroderma pigmentosum].

Xeroderma pigmentosum has been known to result from disturbance in the repair of injured DNA caused by the ultra violet light. According to cell fusion studies, this disease is classified into 8 groups. Among these groups, group A (A-XP) shows the most severe type of neurological disturbance.

Video analysis of gross body movements during sleep.

Gross body movements (GM) during sleep, classified into four GM types by the involved parts of body, were evaluated using two-dimensional video analysis in five normal children aged 4-12 years. The rate of occurrence of all GM types showed apparent sleep stage dependency. Among four GM types, GM-1 (GM with axial rotation) was the most frequent.

Sleep development in children with congenital and acquired hypothyroidism.

To determine how thyroid hormone deficiency before birth influences early development of the human central nervous system, we examined sleep development in children with congenital hypothyroidism using all-night polysomnography. Although the sleep-wakefulness circadian rhythm was not disturbed, two patients under 1 year of age showed mild decreases of REM sleep. Rapid eye movements during REM sleep were significantly decreased in one patient in whom thyroxine replacement was delayed.
