Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies showed inconsistent links between PCSK9 levels and cardiovascular event risk due to improper measurement methods.
  • This study is a sub-analysis of the REAL-CAD trial, which compared the effects of high and low-dose statin therapy on cardiovascular outcomes in stable coronary artery disease patients.
  • The results indicated that neither mature nor furin-cleaved PCSK9 levels effectively predicted major adverse cardiovascular events, suggesting they are not useful markers in statin-treated patients.

Context: Adrenal incidentalomas, including nonfunctioning adrenal incidentalomas (NFAI), are associated with a high prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM). While NFAI is diagnosed by exclusion when no hormone excess exists, subtle cortisol secretion may exist and contribute to DM development. However, it alone cannot explain the increased risk, and whether other steroid metabolites are involved remains unclear.

The tumor suppressor TP53 gene, the most frequently mutated gene in human cancers, produces the product tumor protein p53, which plays an essential role in DNA damage. p53 protein mutations may contribute to tumorigenesis by loss of tumor suppressive functions and malignancy of cancer cells via gain-of-oncogenic functions. We previously reported that mutant p53 proteins form aggregates and that cytoplasmic p53 aggregates were associated with poor prognosis in human ovarian cancer.

Background: A delayed and recurrent complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) is a life-threatening complication of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Post-TAVR evaluation may be important in predicting delayed and recurrent CAVB requiring permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI). The impact of new-onset right bundle-branch block (RBBB) after TAVR on PPI remains unknown.

Cryptococcosis, a globally distributed mycotic disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or C. gattii, has been extensively studied in various domestic animals and humans. However, non-domestic species have often been overlooked in the literature, with limited attention given to their susceptibility and contribution to the epidemiology of the disease.

Background: The human adrenal cortex consists of three functionally and structurally distinct layers; zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata (zF), and zona reticularis (zR), and produces adrenal steroid hormones in a layer-specific manner; aldosterone, cortisol, and adrenal androgens, respectively. Cortisol-producing adenomas (CPAs) occur mostly as a result of somatic mutations associated with the protein kinase A pathway. However, how CPAs develop after adrenocortical cells acquire genetic mutations, remains poorly understood.

Article Synopsis
  • High platelet-derived thrombogenicity in STEMI patients correlates with poor outcomes, and this study investigates the impact of acute inflammation on this condition.
  • The research included 150 STEMI patients, measuring platelet-derived thrombogenicity and peak leukocyte counts to assess inflammatory responses.
  • Findings indicate that patients with higher leukocyte counts exhibited significantly increased platelet-derived thrombogenicity and higher creatine kinase levels, highlighting leukocyte count as an independent factor influencing thrombogenicity during primary PCI.

Unlabelled: Coronary obstruction is a rare but life-threatening complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This article describes the case of a patient with severe aortic valve stenosis treated with TAVI, during which preventive coronary wiring using a pressure wire was performed for coronary protection. After the deployment of the transcatheter heart valve (THV), the values of the fractional flow reserve (FFR) and resting full-cycle ratio (RFR) remarkably decreased, although the findings of transesophageal echocardiography and coronary angiography did not suggest coronary obstruction.

Aims: Higher left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) is related to unfavourable prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). The cause of this finding needs to be haemodynamically explained. Thus, we investigated this crucial issue from the perspective of LV-arterial (A) and right ventricular (RV)-pulmonary arterial (PA) coupling.

Understanding the growth and evolution of social networks is an important area of study, as these networks form the foundation for many popular online services such as social networking sites (SNS) and online games. However, previous models developed to explain the growth mechanisms of these networks have struggled to accurately reproduce certain behaviors that are frequently observed in real data, such as waves of novelty, in which new individuals or topics receive more attention than existing ones for a short period of time. In this study, we introduce a new model that incorporates context information into existing agent-based models in order to more accurately capture the structure and growth dynamics of these networks.

Pancreatic islet inflammation plays a crucial role in the etiology of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Macrophages residing in pancreatic islets have emerged as key players in islet inflammation. Macrophages express a plethora of innate immune receptors that bind to environmental and metabolic cues and integrate these signals to trigger an inflammatory response that contributes to the development of islet inflammation.

Background: Mechanical compression of cardiac conduction system by transcatheter heart valves leads to complete atrioventricular block (CAVB) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Bulging of ventricular septum in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) may be associated with greater compression of conduction system, leading to irreversible CAVB.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of ventricular septal bulging with TAVR-related CAVB and permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI).
