Purpose: This paper presents a novel approach to interpret ground-level O(3) with the measured atmospheric stability index (ASI).

Methods: O(3) concentrations were monitored by automatic analysers at three types of stations: traffic site, residential site and regional background site in 2005, and the ASI was simultaneously measured by observing radon and its short-lived decay products.

Results: The observed results showed a clear annual variation of O(3) concentrations with a maximum in spring, relatively high at the regional background site over 120 ppb, and lower at the residential and traffic sites at about 70 ppb.

Within the Sino-Italian environmental protection cooperation framework established in 2002, a comprehensive air quality monitoring network has been developed in urban Suzhou, a medium-sized Chinese city, in compliance with European standards (Directive 96/62/EC). This paper is among the first attempts to present a systematic and scientific analysis of benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) pollution in China. The environmental impact of Notte Bianca (White Night) holidays held during September 2007 in Rome, Italy, was investigated by measuring aerial concentrations of several genotoxic, psychotropic or source-dependent organic pollutants. Diffusive sampling can be adopted to analyse in detail the temporal and spatial trends of pollutants concentration in specific historic buildings or in museums. An application of this method is discussed in this paper and the results of a still ongoing monitoring campaign at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, in the framework of an EU-founded Project (MIMIC), are presented. Distinct trends in the concentration of NO2, NOx, HONO, HNO3, O3 and SO2 have been observed in eight successive sampling periods from March 2001 to February 2002.

The transfer of acid gases and particles from the atmosphere to the earth's surface, where they exert adverse environmental effects, is called acid deposition. Relevant removal processes occur during dry weather conditions, during the formation of clouds or by scavenging of falling rain or other hydrometeors. The first removal process is called acid dry deposition while the last two, known as rainout and washout, respectively, are lumped together into the phenomenon of acid wet deposition.
