Arctic coasts constitute the critical interface between land and sea, and are subject to rapid changes caused by a warming climate. Current trends throughout the Arctic show increasing erosion trends, while other parts of the coast are experiencing prograding trends. Until now, a vast majority of our knowledge of Arctic coastal evolution is confined to site-specific studies with limited geospatial representation.

Background And Aims: Globally, ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is a leading cause of death among women; however, disparities remain in the diagnosis and treatment of IHD between females and males. There is limited evidence about mortality risks among women with symptoms of IHD who remain undiagnosed. We re-examined the mortality risks in midlife women who completed the Rose Angina Questionnaire, among a subset of the Royal College of General Practitioners' Oral Contraception Study cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • Artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) of aggregates is crucial for urban development in sub-Saharan Africa, providing income for local communities.
  • However, this mining practice leads to significant ecological and health issues, including shifts in freshwater biodiversity and potential health risks to miners.
  • In Rwanda, mining activities create ponds that serve as mosquito breeding grounds, increasing the risk of malaria while simultaneously supporting the need for better housing to combat the disease.

Introduction: The majority of patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) have an indolent disease course, but a substantial fraction (20-30%) of patients progress to advanced stages - usually with a grave prognosis. Early differentiation between indolent and aggressive types of MF is important for the choice of treatment regimen and monitoring of the individual patient. Good biomarkers are therefore desired.

Background: Multiple initiatives aim to develop circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) tests for early cancer detection in asymptomatic individuals. The few studies describing ctDNA-testing in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients report lower ctDNA detection in the asymptomatic patients. Here, we explore if asymptomatic patients differ from symptomatic patients e.

Article Synopsis
  • Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) can help detect residual cancer after treatment, but its low levels make detection tough; tumor-informed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) offers a solution using numerous mutations for better ctDNA identification.
  • * In a study with 144 stage III colorectal cancer patients and 1283 plasma samples, WGS created a unique mutational fingerprint that improved ctDNA detection and demonstrated excellent reproducibility across labs.
  • * Results showed that ctDNA detection post-surgery and post-chemotherapy strongly predicted cancer recurrence, often identifying it months before standard imaging; the study highlights the potential for WGS to track cancer evolution and treatment effects.*

Article Synopsis
  • Hirsutism affects 5%-15% of females and laser treatment is the most effective method for long-term hair removal, but not everyone qualifies for it, creating issues in the healthcare system.
  • This study compares the eligibility assessment capabilities of healthcare professionals to convolutional neural network (CNN) models for laser hair removal.
  • The CNN model achieved a moderate accuracy of 0.52, while dermatologists reported a slightly lower accuracy of 0.48, suggesting that an AI-based tool could improve the assessment process and healthcare access, but further clinical studies are needed to ensure effectiveness.

Background And Purpose: Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) enables generation of conformal dose plans with organ at risk (OAR) sparing potential. However, pelvic IMPT robustness is challenged by inter-fraction motion caused by constant anatomical variations. In this study, the dosimetric impact of inter-fraction motion on target coverage and dose to OAR was quantified in the prospective phase II study ReRad-II on dose-escalated proton reirradiation for locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing two types of surgeries for colorectal cancer: open cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
  • - Blood samples were tested for coagulation changes preoperatively and post-surgery, and systematic checks for VTE were performed between postoperative days 3 to 7.
  • - Results showed that CRS + HIPEC led to a significantly greater increase in prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 levels and a higher incidence of VTE (24%) compared to MIS (5%) within 30 days post-surgery.

Background: Early cancer recognition is key to improving patient outcomes. Diagnosis is often delayed in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), putting them at risk of thromboembolic events and other complications pre-diagnosis. A clear understanding of the barriers to presentation and diagnosis is required.

Background: The uptake of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for patients with colorectal cancer has progressed at differing rates, both across countries, and within countries. This study aimed to investigate uptake for a regional colorectal cancer improvement programme in England.

Method: We calculated the proportion of patients receiving elective laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery amongst those diagnosed with colorectal cancer over 3 time periods (2007-2011, 2012-2016 and 2017-2021) in hospitals participating in the Yorkshire Cancer Research Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme (YCR BCIP).

Objective: Autoantibodies directed against the intracellular protein bicaudal D2 (BICD2) have been identified as a specific marker of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Since autoantibodies are of value in predicting disease onset and identifying meaningful clinical subsets, as well as having prognostic value, this study aimed to establish the prevalence of BICD2 autoantibodies (anti-BICD2) in a cohort of patients with connective tissue disease and healthy controls.

Method: In this cross-sectional study, 363 patients with connective tissue disease (121 SSc, 141 systemic lupus erythematosus, 101 myositis, and 100 blood donors) were tested for the presence of anti-BICD2.

Secukinumab and Dead Sea treatment result in clear skin for many psoriasis patients, through distinct mechanisms. However, recurrence in the same areas after treatments suggests the existence of a molecular scar. We aimed to compare the molecular and genetic differences in psoriasis patients who achieved complete response from secukinumab and Dead Sea climatotherapy treatments.

Purpose: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (eg, axial spondylitis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa) are common diseases that exert an extensive effect on the health-related quality of life, particularly when multiple concomitant conditions are present. Previous reports indicate that the traditional siloed approach to care can lead to a lack of patient centricity and inefficient disease management. In this article, we aimed to evaluate an interdisciplinary program for the treatment of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases compared to routine clinical practice.

Background: Interleukin (IL)-17A is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays an essential role in the development of psoriasis. Although treatment with anti-IL-17A monoclonal antibodies has demonstrated high efficacy in patients with psoriasis, not all patients respond equally well, highlighting the need for biomarkers to predict treatment response. Specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes encoding endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidases 1 and 2 (ERAP1 and ERAP2) have been associated with psoriasis and other immune-mediated diseases.
