Purpose: To evaluate retinal thickness changes of individual retinal layers using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) after uneventful cataract surgery over a 3-months period.
Design: Prospective cohort study.
Methods: 41 patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery were included.
Purpose: The retina is supplied with blood through superficial and deep capillary systems. Paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) is a relatively new terminology based on pathognomonic findings in the spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). A connection with various retinal vascular diseases has been described, which is indicative of an ischemic etiology.

Methods: 37 expert VR surgeons from 21 mainly European countries participated in Delphi method-based questionnaire for diagnosis and treatment of FTMHs and LMHs.
Results: A total of 36 items were rated in round 1 by 37 participants, of which 10 items achieved consensus: intraoperative verification of PVD; clinical superiority of OCT-based FTMH classification; practical ineffectiveness of ocriplasmin; circular 360° ILM peeling for small macular holes; use of regular surgical technique for the size of the hole in concomitant retinal detachment; performing complete vitrectomy; SF6 gas as preferred tamponade; cataract surgery if crystalline lens is mildly/moderately opaque; removal of both ILM and LHEP in LMH surgery.
Purpose: Our aim was to evaluate whether patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cooccurrent amblyopia are more likely to have diseases diagnosed on both the ipsilateral and the contralateral side in a large Austrian database.
Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study.
Methods: Setting: Institutional practice.

Background: As the number of surgical options in glaucoma treatment is continuously rising, evidence regarding distinctive features of these surgeries is becoming more and more important for clinicians to choose the right surgical treatment for each individual patient.
Methods: For this retrospective data analysis, we included glaucoma patients treated with either continuous wave (CW-TSCPC) or micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) in an inpatient setting. Pain intensity was assessed using a numeric rating scale (NRS) ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst imaginable pain) during hospitalization.
Purpose: To assess the rate of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (pCME) in uneventful cataract surgery in surgeons in training vs experienced surgeons and to analyze the rate of pCME according to surgeon's sex.
Methods: Medical reports post phacoemulsification between 2010 and 2018 at the Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Graz, Austria, were reviewed for pCME. A running lifetime number of preceding cataract surgeries was used to express hands-on experience.
Purpose: To prospectively compare microvascular changes of internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeled and nonpeeled eyes in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membranes using optical coherence tomography angiography.
Methods: Forty-two patients with epiretinal membranes underwent vitrectomy with (n = 22) or without ILM peeling (n = 20). The mean superficial capillary plexus foveal avascular zone area change between preoperative and three-month postoperative readings served as the main outcome measure.
Background/aims: Neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels in cerebrospinal fluid and serum are reliable indicators for neuroaxonal damage in a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases. Herein, we investigate NfL levels in serum and anterior chamber fluid of patients with glaucoma.
Methods: Patients scheduled for routine glaucoma or cataract surgery were recruited for this study.
Glaucoma has a significant impact on quality of life. Here, we aimed to evaluate the influence of a reduction in glaucoma medications on quality of life and patient satisfaction after phacoemulsification combined with the Xen gel stent. We carried out a cross-sectional survey of patients who underwent phacoemulsification with the Xen gel stent at the Medical University of Graz, Austria.

Background: Do gender, age, body mass and height influence eye biometrical properties in young adults?
Methods: A total of 155 eyes (92 female, 63 male) of healthy subjects between the ages of 18 and 39 years were included in the study. The subjects' gender and age were recorded, and their body mass, height and biometrical properties of the eyes were measured.
Results: The male subjects had significantly thicker and flatter corneas and lower minimal rim-to-disk ratios than the female subjects did.
Purpose: To evaluate the relevance of external limiting membrane (ELM) on the visual and morphological results in eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME) that underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with epiretinal membrane (ERM) and internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling.
Methods: Medical records of patients with DME who underwent PPV at our unit between January 2017 and December 2019 were reviewed. We assessed preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) using spectral domain OCT (optical coherence tomography).
Precis: Tape sealing of the face mask can prevent fogging artifacts of visual field testing. Here, we demonstrate that tape sealing can improve visual field scores even when fogging artifacts are not obvious.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that visual field scores improve when the face masks are taped to prevent fogging artifacts.
Objectives: Periodontitis and diabetes are known to have a bidirectional relationship. Diabetic macular edema is a complication of diabetes that is strongly influenced by inflammatory pathways. However, it remains to be established whether inflammation at other locations, such as periodontitis, affects diabetic macular edema.

Parameters of iron metabolism, including ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor were measured by routine laboratory tests. Serum prion protein was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Can a non-profit organization, such as a university eye department successfully compete with profit companies from industry for the National Prize of the Federal Ministry for Innovation and Business in Austria?
Material And Methods: Following successful committed to excellence (C2E) assessments in 2008 and 2010, a 70-page corporate report was compiled strictly according to the EFQM logic (latest version 2013), consisting of basic concepts, criteria matrix and results/approach/deployment/assessment and refinement (RADAR) logic, which formed the basis for an 1‑day assessment in 2018. Special emphasis was laid on the development and presentation of the strategy by means of the X‑matrix (according to Hoshin-Kanri) between the University Eye Department and its shareholders, the Styrian Hospital Association (KAGes) owned by the Federal State of Styria and the Medical University financed by the Austrian State Federal Ministry.
Purpose: Numerous studies suggest that reactive oxygen species play a crucial role in the development of glaucoma. Since glaucoma patients exhibit posterior vitreous detachment earlier than controls, it has been suggested that reactive oxygen species-increased in glaucoma-also affect the vitreous. In the present study we evaluated the influence of open-angle glaucoma oxidative stress on the redox state of vitreous albumin.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAscorbic acid is present at high concentrations in the vitreous and plays a central role in vitreous redox chemistry. Albumin is the main protein in the vitreous with antioxidant properties and occurs in different oxidation states, which can be used as redox indicators, but have not been studied in the vitreous. This study, therefore, addressed the vitreous redox state of cysteine-34 of albumin in relation to the ascorbic acid content, which has been suggested to exert a main function in detoxifying reactive oxygen in the vitreous.

Combination of proper surgical technique and new diagnostic markers, both clinical and molecular, can help improve the diagnosis and prognosis of RD treatment.
Methods: 12 patients with rhegmatogenous RD (rRD) were included into the study after obtaining patient consent and Regional Ethical Approval (average age: 58.
This study uses a list of 17 predefined questions to examine the information on rhegmatogenous retinal detachment available to patients via 6 public websites.
