Article Synopsis
  • ATP acts as a signal that activates immune responses in the brain, particularly in cells like astrocytes and microglia, leading to neuroinflammation.
  • The study found that when astrocytes were exposed to increasing levels of ATP, they showed signs of activation, such as changes in shape and cell structure, but did not increase the production of certain inflammatory proteins or promote cell migration.
  • Instead of causing oxidative stress, ATP helped boost the antioxidant defenses of astrocytes, suggesting that while ATP activates these cells, it doesn't fully push them into a reactive state in laboratory conditions.
