Structural competency in New Mexico: Moving outside of medical education.

In 2019, the Doña Ana Wellness Institute (DAWI), Doña Ana County, New Mexico's health council, sponsored two trainings in structural competency by the Structural Competency Working Group. One focused on health care professionals and learners; the other focused on government, non-profit organisations, and elected officials. DAWI and New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) representatives attended the trainings and identified the structural competency model as useful for the health equity work both groups were already engaging.

Examining the Prevalence of Peripartum Depressive Symptoms in a Border Community.

The aim of this study was to investigate the microRNA (miRNA) expression pattern in neutrophils from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and its contribution to their pathogenic profile and to analyze the effect of specific autoantibodies or inflammatory components in the regulation of miRNA in RA neutrophils and its modulation by biological therapies. Neutrophils were isolated from paired peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid samples of 40 patients with RA and from PB of 40 healthy donors. A miRNA array was performed using nCounter technology.

Addressing the Opioid Crisis: Community Partnerships in Primary Care.

Introduction: New Mexico is currently ranked 17th in the United States for drug overdose death rates. Our project seeks to decrease opioid overdose deaths in a community by increasing the number of patients with naloxone in a local family medicine residency clinic.

Methods: We developed a protocol wherein providers asked patients at risk of opioid overdose about naloxone access.

Molecular Characterization of Monocyte Subsets Reveals Specific and Distinctive Molecular Signatures Associated With Cardiovascular Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This study, developed within the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking project PRECISESADS framework, aimed at functionally characterize the monocyte subsets in RA patients, and analyze their involvement in the increased CV risk associated with RA. The frequencies of monocyte subpopulations in the peripheral blood of 140 RA patients and 145 healthy donors (HDs) included in the PRECISESADS study were determined by flow cytometry. A second cohort of 50 RA patients and 30 HDs was included, of which CD14 and CD16 monocyte subpopulations were isolated using immuno-magnetic selection.

Methods: Data came from the 5-wave, longitudinal Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing (FFCW) Study, an investigation of a cohort of nearly 5,000 births, which over sampled non-marital births.

Benefits of increased home-visitation services: exploring a case management model.

This study examined outcome measures of a home-visitation program that provided services to first-born children and their parents. Home-visitation workers conducted pretest-posttest assessments for prenatal and postpartum periods for 109 families. Families were assessed using the Revised North Carolina Family Assessment Scale.

Perinatal outcomes among Mexican Americans: a review of an epidemiological paradox.

This article presents a review of 3 possible explanations for the seemingly apparent paradox of favorable birthweight outcomes among Mexican Americans. Evidence is grouped into 3 explanations: cultural, under-reporting, and bio-medical. With an emphasis on the link between acculturation among Mexican Americans and their perinatal outcomes, the key correlates associated with lower rates of low birth weight (LBW) are examined and critiqued.
