Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often associated with reduced cerebral blood flow and an increased inflammatory response, leading to secondary brain damage. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) has been shown to improve cerebral hemodynamics in non-TBI, but its effects in TBI are still unclear.

Objective: This prospective pilot study investigates the effects of SGB on cerebral hemodynamics and neuroinflammatory responses in patients with moderate to severe TBI with the aim of evaluating its potential as a therapeutic intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effects of postdeposition treatments (UV-ozone and thermal annealing) on aluminum-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Al) thin films grown by atomic layer deposition.
  • - X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the films exhibit a polycrystalline wurtzite structure with an increase in crystal size after thermal annealing, while UV-ozone treatment does not significantly alter crystallinity.
  • - Postdeposition treatments influence the electrical and optical properties of ZnO:Al, with UV-ozone exposure increasing oxygen vacancies and effectively reducing sheet resistance without altering the films' basic structure or morphology.

Article Synopsis
  • Regional anaesthesia, particularly retrobulbar block, is commonly used in day case ophthalmic surgeries for effective eye akinesia and local anaesthesia, but it carries risks of serious complications due to the eye's anatomy.* -
  • In a case involving an 82-year-old female patient, a retrobulbar block led to severe complications, including lethargy, unconsciousness, bradycardia, and respiratory arrest shortly after administration, necessitating emergency resuscitation.* -
  • To reduce risks associated with retrobulbar blocks, it's advised to use lower volumes and concentrations of local anaesthetics, perform the block by skilled practitioners, and ensure patients are monitored for at least 20 minutes post-procedure with

For first order metal-insulator transitions we show that, together with the dc conductance zero, there is a second critical point where the dielectric constant becomes zero and further turns negative. At this point the metallic reflectivity sharply increases. The two points can be separated by a phase separation state in a 3D disordered system but may tend to merge in 2D.

An airborne UV-visible spectrometer, the Gas Analyzer Spectrometer Correlating Optical Differences, airborne version (GASCOD/A4pi) was successfully operated during the Airborne Polar Experiment, Geophysica Aircraft in Antarctica airborne campaign from Ushuaia (54 degrees 49' S, 68 degrees 18' W), Argentina in southern spring 1999. The instrument measured scattered solar radiation through three optical windows with a narrow field of view (FOV), one from the zenith, two from the horizontal, as well as actinic fluxes through 2pi FOV radiometric heads. Only a few airborne measurements of scattered solar radiation at different angles from the zenith are available in the literature.
