Background/aims: We evaluated whether early ribavirin pharmacokinetics differ comparing hepatitis C/human immunodeficiency virus coinfected sustained virological responders and nonresponders.
Methods: Twenty-four treatment-naive coinfected patients received pegylated-interferon alfa-2b (12 kDa) (1.5 microg/kg) once weekly plus daily ribavirin (13.
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is commonly used by HIV-infected men, but its endocrine effects in this population are not well defined. We conducted an 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine the effects of escalating doses (100-400 mg/d) of DHEA on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axes, and on a number of metabolic parameters in 69 HIV-positive men (31 in DHEA-treated group, 38 in placebo group). High-dose (250 microg) corticotropin and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone stimulation tests were carried out in all subjects.

We explored the enormous combinatorial diversity among cardiolipin species, which results from the presence of four fatty acids in each molecule, by integrated use of high-performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, diacylglycerol species analysis, fatty acid analysis, and selective cleavage of fatty acids by phospholipase A2. The most abundant cardiolipin species from various organisms and tissues (human heart, human lymphoblasts, rat liver, Drosophila, sea urchin sperm, yeast, mung bean hypocotyls) contained only one or two types of fatty acids, which generated a high degree of structural uniformity and molecular symmetry.
