Background: Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRD) are one of the main causes of incurable blindness worldwide. IRD are caused by mutations in genes that encode essential proteins for the retina, leading to photoreceptor degeneration and loss of visual function. IRD generates an enormous global financial burden due to the lack of understanding of a significant part of its pathophysiology, molecular diagnosis, and the near absence of non-palliative treatment options.

The PLEX Elite 9000 (Carl Zeiss AC, Jena, Germany) is a new swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) underdevelopment that allows wider, deeper and more detailed posterior-segment visualization; it can acquire ultra-wide OCT angiography (OCTA) or new ultra-wide high-density scans in one image. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) secrete neuroprotective molecules that may be useful as an alternative to cell transplantation itself. Our purpose was to develop different pharmaceutical compositions based on conditioned medium (CM) of adipose MSC (aMSC) stimulated by and/or combined with nicotinamide (NIC), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), or both factors; and to evaluate their proliferative and neuroprotective potential. Perfluorocarbon liquids (PFCLs) have been considered safe for intraocular manipulation of the retina, but since 2013 many cases of acute eye toxicity cousing blindness have been reported in various countries when using various commercial PFCLs.
