Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are secondary plant metabolites playing an important role as phytotoxins in the plant defense mechanisms and can be present as contaminant in the food of humans and animals. The PA monocrotaline (MCT), one of the major plant derived toxin that affect humans and animals, is present in a high concentration in Crotalaria spp. (Leguminosae) seeds and can induce toxicity after consumption, characterized mainly by hepatotoxicity and pneumotoxicity.

Even the most widely used medications for pain treatment are still ineffective or unsafe for some patients, especially for those who suffer from chronic pain. Substances containing the chromone scaffold have shown a variety of biological activities, including analgesic effects.

Herein we assessed the pharmacological potential of three chromones (1, 2 and 3) isolated from Dictyoloma vandellianum as anti-inflammatory agents using in vitro and in vivo approaches. During in vitro screening, the production of NO and cytokines by macrophages stimulated with LPS and IFN-γ was inhibited by all chromones at concentrations (5-20 μM) that did not induce cytotoxicity.

Juss (Rutaceae). Cytotoxic activities towards tumor cell lines B16-F10, HepG2, K562 and HL60 and non-tumor cells PBMC were evaluated for compounds 1 - 6.
